I'm off to Japan later this year, and planning to travel about using the Shinkansen.

How necessary are a set of steps for photography at bases such as Hyakuri?

Where would be a good place to purchase them in Japan if they are necessary?
I'll be staying near Tokyo station.

I'm not sure about how useful or necessary steps are at Japanese airbases but there are a couple of nationwide DIY stores. One has the lovely name 'Joyful Honda'!

Hi Mark,

They will be necessary for airfields such as Hyakuri and Chitose. I assume you'll be renting a car to get out to the bases? Most aren't easily accesible by train. If so, it should be much easier to find a place to purchase a ladder in the areas near the bases than in downtown Tokyo. I've done some shooting at bases there (mostly CTS), so let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Dana & Karl,

many thanks. I've been using a site - Japan Spotter Association to piece together the info I need on getting to & from places. I'm not only doing aviation on my trip, and being a solo traveller the cost of car rental in Japan is expensive when compared to the public transport options. My other option would be to take my steps with me from the UK, but again this might not be the most pratical option.

Mark
