Sadly our friend and Airliner.net photographer Michel Gilliand left us forever on July 10th.

I did not know him personally but had exchanged several mails with him in the last few years. He was one of the great Paris-ramp photographers and has posted here some great stuff – but this is only a small extract of his work, a real treasure for all classic airliner collectors.

Well, that's a great shame. Michel did a wonderful job of documenting civil aviation in Paris and elsewhere and I'm very grateful that he decided to share his photos with the wider public at a.net.

A shocking loss. We corresponded for a time in the heyday of slide trading and I am truly saddened by the news.

Have always enjoyed his Mercure 100 images. A sad loss for sure.

I'm sitting in my office looking at a 1984 edition of JP Airline fleets, and there is Michel Gilliand, contributing a photo of a Republique du Mali Bae146 at CDG, in fact, this one:

It isn't the same photo in the JP book, but it looks to be from the same sequence.

A great collection full of wonderful things. R.I.P.

His and Perry Hoppe's are some of the best slide scans I've seen. RIP Michel.

Indeed a sad loss.

Producing scans of this quality from slides is not easy - Michel was a craftsman.

It makes me wonder how long before this becomes a lost art. Are there any 'youngsters' keeping the tradition going?

People can argue about the relative merits of film & digital, but one look at Michel's pics shows that slides (even after scanning) are 'different' to digital and result in images that cannot be directly reproduced with a DSLR.

Cheers,

Colin
