New MIA Spotting Area And Access?

Around last December I had overheard some spotters at the El Dorado location that were locals talking about a new spotting area at MIA such as a possible elevated platform located further east (of El Dorado) on Periimeter Rd near where the planes actually touch down on Runway 9.

Another thing that I heard discussed was for people to get an access badge that they could wear that would get them access to other locations for spotting like the Cargo U's, some of the lots on the north side, other locations around the perimeter. The idea was that people could get a badge with a background check and could go to places that are normally off limit like the roof parking of the cargo U's and not have to worry about getting kicked out.

I had also heard of some stuff like making El Dorado more of an "official spotting area" and possibly putting some fence holes there.

Is there any update on the spotter areas at MIA?

A number of locations and viewpoints are in consideration. Some have been ruled out due to site issues. Others are still in play. We are actively working with the MIA management on this. Due to the different agencies involved, regulations, codes etc, this is not as simple as one would think hence the long and slow development of this. We are in Year 2+ of our quest. MIA management has been great to work with.

Same as above. It is still in play.

In the meantime, the same rules apply. The official location is at the holes by 12. El Dorado continues to be an unofficial location and no one gets hassled there.

We do ask all visitors-especially those from outside the US- to respect the rules.

EXAMPLE 1: PLEASE DO NOT PUT LADDERS ON THE FENCE or CLOSE TO IT.
EXAMPLE 2: Stay off the railroad tracks.
EXAMPLE 3: Don't get in the way of traffic or park in a manner that will effect traffic.

Thank you for responding. It would be nice to get some sort of badge and be able to spot legally from the Us in the summer when Runway 27 is in use. I just need a lens like you have.

I heard there was a little incident the other day where some dumbass kids from a nearby a Comic Con put a toy AK-47 that looked almost real from a distance at El Dorado pointed at the runway and cops got involved. Do you think that will affect spotting there in the future and were these kids busted?

Let us say that they probably wont ever do that again.

We had a good discussion with MIA management and they are aware that these people had nothing to do with us. Another benefit of having good communication with the other side of the fence. It worked out well.

By the way, this is another reason why i recommend to stay away from the fence and keep ladders off it. There are eyes watching all the time. The police response to the event above was quick (3-5mins) and large (estimated at 15-20 cars).

Ok that is good to know that MIA doesn't take it out on spotters. I am always afraid of one idiot ruining it for everyone else like people stopping on that freeway on ramp to take pics of planes in the maintenance area, or people taking pictures over the fences there which I have seen on here also.

Hopefully these guys who put that AK-47 toy there got more than just a warning, lets just say I hope they had to change their pants after some fear the authorities should have put into them.

It is good to know also that the usual Miami Spotters are also the eyes and ears for the airport and can act like extra security.

I was at The holes in March with another spotter, and I was told to leave by a (Miami-Dade) police officer. She said I needed a MIA airport badge to spot there. Is that true ? I just had my camera - no ladders or anything like that, but maybe it was were i was parked.

Been shooting at the The Holes several times in the past month and had no problem whatsoever. Plenty of Miami-Dade police went by and of course the location is immediately next to the Homeland Security parking lot/office and never got a second look or even had anyone stop.

Isn't there a sign there that says PHOTOGRAPHY PERMITTED?

You can have holes every 10 inches around the airport, but police has been kicking out people parking cars by the building on the side of the road (few years ago there was no problem parking your car there). You could park your car there and walk to the holes. As long as you didn't go into Customs parking lot you were ok.
In 3 weeks I'll be making my second annual trip to MIA for spotting. Its getting harder and harder to have quality time spotting. I understand that police can check you ID, but kicking people out for parking on the side of the street where there is no traffic is beyond me. I'm talking about this spot 25.79666,-80.301913

Same goes for OPF. There is couple of security guys going nuts. I was taking picture of Lowa B707 - about 300 feet away from the nearest fence, and he gave me hard time. What the hell happened to this place?

This is the shot that I had hard time taking.

I guess it depends who is on duty. I was at Opa Locka two weeks ago,and walked right up to the fence to get pictures of the 707,and other airplanes, and no one said anything to me.

That is a rare and unfortunate incident.

The holes are the ONE official space for aviation photography at MIA. We have the official support of the Airport Administration and security at the very highest level of MIA to use that place. It is unfortunate you had the incident.

I presume you don't have a picture of the officer or badge number etc to identify the officer? It is possible (most likely) that it is a new officer and is not aware of the policy. If i have the information, I can bring it to the attention of the commander. You can email me the info and/or any other information such as date/time etc to eksath@airliners.net and i can look into it.

I was there about 6:30 PM on Thursday, March 14. We were about to leave anyway, so I didn't bother to get the name or badge number, or pursue it any further. She wasn't saying we couldn't take pictures (she suggested going to the south side of the airport, near El Dorado), and she wasn't rude like you hear about (at other airports) once in awhile. She didn't ask for ID. I was just a little surprised that she stopped (normally you will see them passing by when they are patrolling). There were also several Homeland Security vehicles that left their lot while we were there, and no questions.

I just found it interesting that she said The Holes were for people *that had MIA airport badges*, and I wondered if anyone else had heard/been told that. I asked if that was a new policy, and she said it was.

I agree that she was probably new and didn't know/wasn't fully informed about the spotting community and locations in South Florida. Next time I visit (I live in Missouri), I will go back and most likely see the police/security just doing their normal patrols.

I did get a couple decent pictures while I was there, including a 738 in the new AA livery !

Please feel free to use that place in the future. It is a miscommunication of some sort. It is open for the general public hence no badge is required.

Ironic that she was trying to send you to the unofficial spot.

The holes are used by people almost everyday.

Enjoy your next visit to Miami.

My advice is check in at the Miami Dade offices at OPF before hand. I always let them know I am there - they told me I can use ladders or shoot through the fence, just can't climb the fence. I have spoken to the secretary and last time I was there I got a ramp tour by the airport manager, who is a super cool guy.

Eksath,

Does the aviation photography Miami facebook site keep updates on all the movements around MIA and what is happening with getting the spotting locations? I decided to finally join facebook this afternoon after I swore I never would - but I plan on coming down to MIA in a couple weeks as I would like to shoot the LH 748 before the A380 returns and also get that Etihad Cargo 748F. It looks like you have to get approved to join the site, which is the first facebook site I had to do that on so far. Is it only open for Miami people or can anyone join once approved? I live in Orlando but I come down to MIA to spot 3-4+ times a year.

When you come in on 37th Ave, I think the street you turn on is called Curtis - that is the main entrance into OPF from 37th, if not the only entrance. Its a divided street, you wind around around past some parked GA planes. Curtiss ends at 42nd Street, but on the right before the street dead ends into 42nd there is a one floor building on the right with another side street right before it. The parking is right up front and the secretary is right by the door. If she is away at lunch, you might have to ring a buzzer but most of the time you can walk right in. Just let her know that you are there and she says ladders are Ok, just dont climb over or on the fence.

I'm working 16 days straight because we are short staffed in Sept. I was actually thinking this weekend because originally the weather forecast looked dry for MIA, but now it looks like rain so I might wait until October but would love to get the LH 748.
