Not seeking advice per se but collecting opinions on which airports in the world are best for photographing classic jets/props. Could be an interesting thread if it 'takes off'....

Which airports do you think are best overall to photograph classic airliners, based on both numbers and variety?

After we've tackled that, how about the best airports by type? Specifically.....

An-12
707
727
732
DC-3
DC-4
DC-6
DC-7
DC-8
DC-9
DC-10 (I'm gonna guess Memphis for these!)
Il-62
Tu-134
Tu-154
...plus any others you'd care to mention

Hopefully this could be an informative and entertaining thread. Input whatever you feel!

Karl

There may well be better places, but if you spent the last few hours in YMX you would have seen some 727s, a 732, a DC-9 and a DC-10 (Plus a CV-580 for a bonus) Someplace like YMX might be a numbers contender for the 727 as there are still at least two Canadian operators with decent fleets.

I have no data on it, but I seem to recall that MIA is a name that sometimes gets mentioned for having interesting aircraft, which I presume would include classics.

On the home front, I was surprised to find that I have photographed 5 of the aircraft on your list (if you include military variants) at modest BTV over the past few years. And a 742, which I think would be a legitimate addition to your list.

707
727
732
DC-3
DC-4
DC-6
DC-7
DC-8
DC-9
DC-10

Simple answer: OPF

You can add to it An-24/26 and Convairs

Maybe not on your list but you'll still get a ton of prop commuters and stored classics at Stockholm ARN. SF340/2000, ATP, J31/2 from various airlines in large numbers. A few SE210s and DC-8s stored and quite visible.

Just been looking through images of 732s and Aruba's Oranjestad airport seems to be good for them with Estelar, Venezolana and Avior all operating (all images taken early June, with the Estelar and Venezolana being present on the same day).

Looks like there are a good number up in Canada too.

You can get a lot of these and much more like Il-18, Il-76, An-12, An-72 even the last Il-86 in the world if you go to Chkalovsky in Russia. Easily accessible airport in the Moscow area. Yes, it is military but spotting there is absolutely no problem and half the aircraft still carry old school "Aeroflot" titles. Absolutely no western built aircraft and sometimes you may get lucky and get a visiting An-124 or An-22. I was there last year and in 3 hours I got six different Tu-134s. Also almost all the Tu-154s there are of the old Tu-154B-2 model. Just a few of my photos from there:

Hi Sovietjet,

I have been looking at that place but was told it was a 'no-go' for photography due to it being a military field. How easy is it to photograph there? Just packing my bags.......

Very easy. As long as you follow the proper rules and precautions as you would at any other airport nobody will care. There are spotters around that airport almost daily in the summer when it is still warm (I don't recommend trying to stay out there all day in the middle of January winter in Russia!!). A friend of mine who lives in the USA just went there last week and was very pleased.
