Most are stolen from competing sites, but there are photos stolen from here as well. Will these people ever learn? Obviously not since these pages continue to pop up like weeds. At least this person didn't try to alter the copyright bars and watermarks to try to pass them off as their own photos.....

Thank you for bringing this up. There is simply no end to piracy though. I have had so many of my images stolen, I have more or less quit trying to stop them. I have even found my images stolen and re-posted within the airliners.net forums...

I guess this will never change. People think it is allowed as they leave the copyright bar up and even write at the top: "we share pictures from the following sites". And they think this makes it legal and ok.

Facebook doesn't do anything about these. You have to flag each photo to bring it to their attention, but they still do not close the page. I flagged 10+ pictures of mine (on different pages), they were removed and that's about it...

Neverending story. But it is annoying.

Netiquette is dead.

Linking to image pages, or even re-uploading the original image to FB with a linkback in the comments is such a trivial task, yet it seems that 99% of these tumblr/facebook/instagram types simply cannot wrap their heads around it.

A real shame.

Is the page still up? It was still up earlier today (posted a few comments directed towards the person behind the page), but when I click the link now, it takes me back to my Facebook home page. So I'm not sure if I'm blocked or the page has been removed (I'm hoping its' the latter...). One thing I noticed was a few days back, they started posting photos without any sort of copyright bars or watermarks on them.

Happens to me as well. I will be taken to my facebook page. And I haven't posted on their facebook page at all. So I guess I am not blocked and the page seems to be gone.

That's a sure enough sign that the page has been removed. I also tried to access it via a browser in which I am not logged into Facebook on and got a similar result.

One of the competitor sites in which a lot of the photos on that page were stolen from caught wind of it via this thread and they definitely played a role in getting the page taken down. It is probably in the best interest of all such sites to let each other know when pages like this pop up so they can get the page taken down.

Yes, I tried that as well and got the same result.

For sure. At some point we should forget the competition and try to work together and fight such behaviour.

Well, I just checked again and the site is still up - or again. Don't know.

Many pictures with removed copyright bar, others still have it on.

It's back up for me as well.    I'm apparently blocked from commenting on the page now as well since I called them out on the theft..... Oh darn......

This person removing the copyright bars doesn't make it cool either. They've also removed the mentions of the sites the photos came from as if hiding the sources will keep the heat off of them.....

Why do airliners.net leave it up to the individual photographers to chase down copyright violations, when the person uploading them to Facebook or other sites is in clear breach of this sites Terms of Use. In that regard, Demand Media might have more success at getting copyright violaters shut down than what the individual would.

Blame Facebook's policies in regards to reporting copyright infringement. It used to be easier for Airliners.net to get this sort of stuff removed from Facebook, but these days, the person whose copyrighted work is being infringed on has to report it. Even though someone is posting A.net photos in violation of the this site's policies, they really can't go to bat like they used to because of Facebook's own (and sometimes twisted) policies. Even though they are misusing A.net's logos and associated copyrights, there's not a lot they can do about it. Even sites like Flickr require the photographer to submit infringement reports.

I was just alerted to another page on FB that was posting photos without permission - mostly military stuff.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Battle-Machines/143383039143625

They're careful to only take non-watermarked images, so there are not too many images from a.net up there, but worth checking out nonetheless.

Not working for me. Simply redirects me to the Facebook homepage.

I just had the most hilarious (if frustrating) with the admin of the Battle Machines page I linked to above ( http://www.facebook.com/pages/Battle-Machines/143383039143625 )

I sent him a message asking for removal of a handful of my images and this is what I get in reply:

Quoting Battle Machines Page Admin:
u shud be happy that your pics have been posted...

... By the way every pic has a photographer so u expect me to find the photographer of every pic and give credits, well thats impossible...

... sorry it isnt possible mate coz every pic has a photographer and I cant fnd photographer of all the pics and give credits and ask for permission...

S/he then asks:

Quoting Battle Machines Page Admin:
another question how do u "own" these pictures ?

So I stated (again) that I'm the photographer, and linked to the Facebook intellectual property info page - http://www.facebook.com/help/intellectual_property

To which I received this reply:

Quoting Battle Machines Page Admin:
ur link states "Under the laws of most countries, copyright is the legal right that protects original works of authorship, such as books, music, film and art" ur pic isnt ur art its a photograph

it isnt ur creation its just a picture of an already existing object

After having a hearty laugh, I realised I'd been wasting my time and filled a bunch of IP violation reports. Hopefully facebook will sort these out too.

Sometimes I wonder if there should be a minimum IQ threshold for people to be allowed to use the internet...

As well as installing a breathalyzer on computers so that people don't get drunk and post or do stupid things on the internet. Some of the responses these people infringing on the copyrights of others only make sense if you're drunk...... There's been some of these characters that have claimed that the photos don't belong to the photographers, but to the airlines whose planes they are. Another said that the planes in the photos they were stealing "belong to him" because he "is a major share holder in those airlines" and that the photographers "did not get permission" to photographer "other people (sic) property". For some laughs, here's a thread from last year in which some of us tangled with some of the folks behind similar pages that were stealing photos from here (and other sites):

Facebook Page Stealing Photos From A.net Photogs (by jeffreyklm Mar 17 2012 in Aviation Photography)

There's one page on Facebook that has been linked here in similar threads several times and been reported for copyright infringement and still stays up. They remove the copyright bar to attempt to cover their tracks.

http://www.facebook.com/AviationFanPage

The problem is that so many people think of the Internet as a giant public library and everything is free for the taking.
