Heavies At LAX- Distributed Evenly Amongst North/s

Hello,

I was just reading with interest the thread titled "A380's At LAX - In N Out Or Imperial Hill? " With an impending
arrival at LAX planned (could be as early as this Sunday) and first time spotting there, is there a tendency by heavies
to frequent northside or southside arrivals or are they rather randomly distributed by ATC?

With a dearth of heavy arrivals here at YEG, I'm looking to maximize my shooting of heavies (inc. the 380 of course)
without having to make too many moves ( not sure at this point whether I will have ground transportation or not).

Simple, spend the first day shooting the north and the second day shooting the south.

Pretty evenly split in my experience (excepting the A380, which tends to use the north side). Some airlines tend to land more on one side or the other, but for a lot of the international airlines, it can be a crapshoot as to which side they use.

So yeah, do what Unattendedbag suggested, and just hope that your choices work out.  

Unfortunately, this is the time of year when light isn't particularly great on either side (the sun is rising almost directly in the east, and setting almost directly in the west, which doesn't bode all that well for runways oriented east-west).

Last week there seemed to be a decided bias to heavies on the north side.

I think this boils down to the new Bradley concourse being fully opened, and the south side gates on the old Bradley concourse nolonger being used - with the old north gates on Bradley still being used, and the new concourse obviously having an even north south spread, there's obviously more international gates on the north side of the airport now.

My understanding is that the old Bradley south concourse is being demolished first and once that's done it will be followed by the old north concourse being torn down. As these works go on, there will be a bias towards more gates on one side of the airport than the other and that may have some impact on whic side the heavies use.

You'd think arrivals from Asia and points north would tend to go to the north runways, leaving the south runways for the millions of arrivals from the east. Doesn't the STAR from Hawaii and beyond approach Santa Monica too?

You would think indeed. But that's not always the case. Even arrivals that do the approach over SMO can get routed to the north or south runways:

This is all correct. It has to do with traffic flow at the moment. I fly in and out of there very frequently as an airline pilot and I have the runways switched a couple of times in the same flight. Yes, there are norms, but they are always subject to change with flow.

Thank you all for the very valuable information (particularly Vikkivik with the weather/light info which I had not considered). In light of this info (pun intended) , I decided not to travel at the planned timeframe. Hopefully a revised mid- November
arrival will produce more favourable lighting conditions; also, it look's like a car rental might be in order if I will
be traversing back and forth between the north/south sides of the airport.

That's definitely a good thing to have. Keep an eye on the weather too, there can be fog in the mornings.

Well it's decided... I'll be making my first spotting sojourn to LAX next Tuesday/Wed. The current plan is to try the
Imperial Hill location in the AM than moving over to the In N Out ( I will have a vehicle). Somewhere in between I'd like to check out the museum

I've read a lot on the best hotel choices for spotting but note that most of this information is dated. Is anyone able to provide some more current information? I'm currently leaning towards either of the Embassy Suites (moreso the North facility) but certainly open to suggestions.

Looking forward to this trip very much =)

I will be at LAX this coming weekend and was wondering how the lighting at In 'n Out/Westchester is during this time of the year? Does the sun still come around far enough or would Imperial Hill be the better choice for late afternoons/sunset?

The address is 9601 Airport Blvd, Los Angeles, CA

I shot there for at least half of my LAX trip this past December, and never had issues. I always bought a little food or drink from them so as to give them my business, kept the drink cup somewhere visible on my car, and got plenty of great shots.

Every single arrival photo in this set, minus the few at the bottom in reverse flow from Imperial Hill, were taken from that location
