Hi All,

Anyone get many comments to their photos?

I used to get them every week or couple of weeks. That was a couple of years ago. Nowadays - hardly ever.

But I can tell that people don't forget to click on stars as a sign of appreciation. Mostly one star, apparently, as my rates steadily go down.

I really haven't gotten comments lately at all either. My rankings show most of my pictures are hovering around the 3 star rate, but many of them haven't even gotten the 5 or more votes to show up in my list.

I get comments occasionally, usually on more popular photos. They're nice to get, and I try and comment on photos now and then too.

Overall, it seems the rate of comments in general has gone down, but I'm not keeping track or anything.

I don't pay any attention to the ratings whatsoever, and I hate the fact that you have to rate a photo to comment on it. Especially if I want to respond to comments on one of my photos - I have to rate my own photo! Pretty silly.

One or two comments occasionally, more frequently on the popular shots.
People do comment more on Facebook so if you get a shot linked it is worth checking the comments there.
Same on flickr, people are more keen on commenting.

Another disadvantage apart from the somewhat awkward procedure you need to go through if you want to post a comment is that I never know who commented. Say, I wish to thank them for their kind words, I just can't.

Would be great to have a Facebook comment box somehow integrated to the photo page. This might even increase the views as comments would be shared on the FB wall of the person who commented.

Where do you see this? Is it a chart on the photo stats page?

I've been here about a year, so I don't know about changes in the number or frequency of comments, but I do know that I get very few on my photos and see very few on other photos, even on top 5 shots and photographers' choice.

The comment numbers are way off when compared to sites like, say, Flickr.

Quoting Ghajdufi (Reply 3):

Very good points all.

I enjoy comments more than anything else - views, stars etc are nothing compared to someone actually taking the time to express an opinion in words. I do hope Demand can work out a system for more interaction on the site.

Cheers
Angad

Here is the lonk for comments abd ratings btw:
http://www.airliners.net/myphotos/photo_comments.main?

You need to scroll down to see the ratings. You can also sort it by different criteria.

Same here. The rating system is honestly really pointless if you ask me.

Quoting Ghajdufi (Reply 3):

Especially if they are an a.net member that I know - I feel like if we were able to respond to kind comments it would actually lead to an increase in comments. It would be nice to at least delineate user comments from photographer replies. If I were to reply to a comment on my own photo, I would just be listed as another "user from the United States."

It's at http://www.airliners.net/myphotos/photo_comments.main . It looks like you aren't able to see the ratings for any photos with fewer than 5 votes.

Again - if I ran the site, I'd just do away with the whole star/rating system. It's hard for photographers to access (if we even care, which I don't), and it's not even listed under each photo for other visitors to see. It's such a subjective and weird metric, too. Several photos of mine probably would have been rated highly were it not for the fact that several users probably rated them 1 star because of a plane or livery they thought was ugly.

Plus, would a.net even accept any photos that users deem are of 1-star quality?

I have no doubt that the ratings are open to abuse. That has certainly happened to me, where a few previously highly rated shots over a long period of time (and with many ratings) suddenly went down - the only explanation was the photos suddenly being rated with a 1, because the average was based on such big numbers then. I still don't know who I upset there, but clearly I was being punished.

My other thought here is that the ratings were introduced (if my memory serves) because there was a new front page feature, promoting photos averaging 4 or above, and with 20 or more ratings. Thus this gave extra exposure to 'liked' photos. Of course this was before the full power of FB and other social media to 'promote' photos was harnessed. This feature hasn't worked for a long time now - if you click on the 'Top Rated Photos' section on the Home page it simply produces the whole database - so there is no filtering any more of 4+ rated photos.

I also agree with the comments here about knowing who has said what. When I comment I always 'sign' my comments so that the photographer knows it was me. Having to 'rate' your own photo in order to respond to a comment is a little awkward (and in the good old days was clearly considered an offense and unacceptable).

Paul

Thanks. I guess I have nothing with 5+ votes because that page has no content.

That's an interesting point, Paul... The same happened with a few of my shots - they would be on the top of the list for months, and all of a sudden they would get lots of low ratings and go down within a couple of days.

Because a few other people complained of the same thing, some time ago I have conducted an experiment. You now that you can rate your photo only once from your IP address, right? I mean, you can push the stars many times, and the message window will appear, but the rating will register only once. Well, I discovered, that from the phone you can rate as many times as you want, and the rating will register. So I took a couple of my pictures, that were sitting there forever with the ratings just around four of so, and just started rating them five stars, until I got them near the top of the list. After that they sat at the top for a couple of days, and then, all of a sudden, they apparently started getting one star raitings, and quite a few of them, because not only they quickly got back to their previous raitings, but went down further, and within a few days became so low, that totally disappeared from the visible part of the list!

Someone had suggested before, to replace the stars with one "like" button. If one likes your picture, let them push it. If not - the person can always write to you and express their dislike. This kind of system would reflect the real raitings and close the system to abuse.

Apart from ratings and comments, haven't overall views gone down? Unless the counter was flawed in the past, the average view per picture has gone down in all my pictures, including the very few that have made it on the top shot list.

Well it is rather strange..out of curiosity after reading this thread (not that I would care) I just checked my ratings and even some of my most common shots that were not getting a lot of exposure appear there, whereas others that were getting a lot more exposure don't?!

All of them have a rating somewhere around 3..what does this tell me? Nothing.

Probably the first and the last time I checked this feature...I agree that they should just get rid of it.

Anyway in the past I just rated the photos where I wanted to put on a comment. As I would only comment a shot that I really like I gave them 5 Stars anyway.
I mean acceptance criteria at a.net is very high, where ist the need to give 1 Star to a shot?!
