Hello everyone,
I am heading down to Brazil in a month on a plane spotting trip. I would like it if someone can either post info about spots around GRU/CGH/SDU/GIG here or point me to a site on the internet that would be of assistance. I have heard some areas around GRU are pretty seedy, and I am a photographer so I will have my camera which happens to be quite new and I'm sure would attract some attention. I can't speak any Portuguese so I don't know what I would do in the situation, but do you guys think I am hearing the wrong things, or that some spots really aren't a good idea. What about around CGH/SDU/GIG, are there any spots located in bad areas there? And I wouldn't mind meeting up with some Brazilian spotters while on vacation. You can drop me a line via email (in my profile) if you'd like it would be appreciated. Has anyone gone to Brazil for spotting before and did you have any troubles at all? Thanks a lot guys, your responses are REALLY appreciated  Smile

Jeremy

i actually didnt get a chance to go spotting, too busy kickin' back and looking at some of the most gorgeous women on the face of the earth... my friend, you will enjoy yourself in brazil!!

also most people there speak spanish as a second language so if you know even a tiny bit of spanish you shouldnt have any trouble getting around... but dont say "gracias", say "obligato!"

ENJOY!

Had 2 weeks spotting it Brasil last year and had no problems. We were asked at Santos Dumont not to take photos by the Airport Authority but otherwise everything was fine.

Thanks for the responses so far guys. I'm still looking for more info in terms of locations at the Rio airports, SDU and GIG.
Has anyone gone down to Brazil and met up with local spotters? I would really like to meet up with some of the local spotters in Sao and Rio, I'd feel much safer that way and I'd have someone to talk airplanes with...
So really, I should not be expecting problems in terms of being a foreigner with a camera taking photos of aircraft? I really do worry about getting my camera either stolen by muggers or taken by the police. I think I will stick to the observation decks at GIG and CGH, while I will probably go out to the end of the 09's at GRU quite a bit and also out to the end of the runway at SDU.
How many days are needed at each airport to pretty much cover it? Are there any totally quiet times or is something interesting arriving all day at any of the airports? This trip is a spotting one, but I think I'd also like to check out Rio and Sao for a day each. I'll have 9 days down there, and in the middle of the week I will take the Ponte Aerea with TAM (chosen only for the fact they have one hell of a colour scheme and I do love to shoot it on the 330's, it's a one hour flight so I'm not exactly looking for incredible service, just a nice flight, and I've heard TAM is good...)
And finally, where can I find reasonably priced hotels near the airports down there. The Golden Flat at CGH looks decent for around $100 Canadian per night. Any other decent priced airport hotels? And on top of that, any decent priced airport hotels where photography is possible from the rooms?

Thanks a lot guys, your help is really appreciated, I'm really looking forward to nailing tons of Brazilian aircraft.
