What is photography like at ATL in the summer? (from outside)
What are some good areas?
How is the south parking garage? Before 9/11 you could go up on the roof and watch planes that were near the end of the south runways. Is it still a good area?

was at ATL last weekend and didn't have any problems. I spent three days there and was only approached one time by a parking garage guard who told me that she didn't mind if I take photos, but that her manager says it's not allowed. When I told her I would be happy to speak to the manager, she said ok, but the manager never showed up. While inside, I wasn't bothered at all, and even was helped by a gate agent when I asked him when a certain aircraft was leaving so I could photograph it.
From outside, I recommend the north parking garage. From there, you can get good views of takeoffs or landings and if you are taking photos, you will be facing away from the sun.
Inside, there are windows all over where you may be able to catch good views. If you are taking pictures, the tint in the windows may affect your results. Delta is pretty active there, so an unoccupied gate will only stay that way for a short while. I found that for afternoon views of the International Concourse E, Concourse D is good because the non-Delta gates there seem to be not as heavily used. I spent quite a bit of time at a US Airways gate there. There are also windows down at the end of Concourses C and D from which you can view the runway.

I have never had any hassle at Hartsfield at all. I prefer the south parking garage over the north, because South African uses the south side runway. It leaves at around 11 am. It either takes off in front off you or taxies right by depending on the winds. I've walked around on the garage for hours with my camera out getting curious looks from the workers but never any problems. This is all recently as well. I only got to Georgia last october.

OK, what about places off the property where you can be near or under the approach path or departure heading, but still close to the airport so the planes are low enough to photo?

I am always too scared to risk anything other than the parking garage for fear that I might waste my rare chances to get shots of this plane. I think both of these guys are employees and have ramp access. Maybe one of them will see this and tell us where they were taken from?

yep. The "under the approach path" type of shot.

When you are in the Concourse area, you can get some good shots. If you wander out to Concourse C (AirTran and ASA), you should get a good view of the airfield.

Only problem is, now after 9/11 you cannot go to the Concourse without a ticket. And, if I go to ATL, it's going to be by car. no ticket Although I think I'll be flying somewhere this summer

i went to the south parking garage last december and got some shots...there are a few (very few) places along the south side of the field where you can pull off and go up to the fence...some good shots of a/c landing on 27L or 9R...takeoffs from 27R or 9L are a bit more difficult...plus you're shooting through a fence most of the time...
i'm going to be flying through ATL on friday on my way to DFW, and coming back the 13th...i'll let you all know how it goes (i got hassled several times the last time i was in ATL)...

I just saw this thread today...It's been a hectic two weeks and no end in sight. Anyway those shots by Gregg Stansbery and I were taken off of Clark Howell road at the Southeastern corner of the airport. This area is a public access area. You get there by taking the Clark Howell exit off of I285 East. Go through the first traffic light and pull off of the road at the second light. You can then walk out onto the bridge over the interstate or stay in the vehicle and get excellent shots. I like to stay in the vehicle so that I don't draw too much attention. This area is great for departure shots if they are leaving to the East. (Which during the day is almost always at minimum separation.) It is also an excellent area for arrivals FROM the east landing on 27L. (Again not a lot of lag time between flights during the day.) As an added bonus the sun will be behind you.
Now for the ugly. Be prepared to get the looks from passersby. Some of them even finally get to use their cellphones for once and call the police. The local police have always been friendly. I just comply with whatever they want and move on if they ask. Most of the time they just drive by slow, but sometimes they will stop and ask you questions. I have only been asked to leave once since 9/11.
BTW, SAA leaves everyday between 1030 and 1100.
Scanner frequencies for these runways - 119.5 and 119.1
Here is another one taken in this area by Gregg Stansbery.

That looks like a good spot. Maybe next weekend I will finally try something besides the garage. I usually take the bus down there from Augusta so I will have to try and walk to that spot in the early morning before SA comes in. I have had an idea for a shot that I have been dying to get for months. You all will be amazed when you see this and wish you had thought of it first

Over here in Huntsville we get a 747F 2 or 3 times a week arriving and departing at the same times. I'm going to keep trying to get him on film...oops, I meant on the flash card!
and keep praying he'll use 36R for departure - that's good for an extreme close up!
