Hi Scott!
I guess you need a little help with adjusting your photos with photoshop after scanning them? Am i right.
1.) Rotate it if neccesary so that the photo has a leveled horizont or even better if some verticals are visible use thos to make the vertical.
2.) Crop the Image
3.) make the imagee size 1024 * something or 1200 by something or whatever you want. For a.net it should be somethin between 800 and 1600 on the longer side.
4.) Adjust the levels
5.) Sharpen it by using the adaptive Unsharpmask so that the picture is sharp but not oversharpened. Oversharpened or jagged is it when you see thos little stairs in a line which should be a line and no stir (Stupid description i know but i cant do it better).
6.) Save it as jpg with the lowest compression (highest Quality). In Photoshop you should set the value to 12.

Scott, don't use photos with a shiny surface. This reduces the quality. Always try to get them without any special creations.
Yes, photoshop is a great program, for easier use MicrosoftPhotoDraw

I don't know exactly, if you want to scan slides or negatives. In my opinion, slides give the better results, than negatives. Of course, there are some photographers here, who upload superb pics taken with negatives, but in my opinion, that's the minority (I hope, I was diplomatic enough ).
Important: Only a good picture can give you a perfect scan! If the negative or slide isn't sharp for example, the picture won't be sharp as well.
As for post-editing in Photoshop, I think Peter gave a good summary on what you have to do, to have good results in almost 99% of all scans.
Tip: try a few scans, upload them and ask us again for advice. I learned A LOT here at Airliners.net (Yes, my pics used to be even worse, than what I upload now )

Gerardo

Hi Scott!
You can scan both negatives and regular photos with the scanner you mention (I'd suggest scanning slides - better quality). I have a similar machine and I scan my slides with it and touch up the results with Adobe Elements which is a great , uncomplicated program to touch up photos (it's also offered as a free trial now).
To scan photos is relatively easy. The software comes with the scanner and is immediately offered as a method of "importing" a scan in Photoshop Elements. Then just follow Peter's instructions for the rest.
(For those not familiar with Scott's ScanJet 5470cse here's a pic
