I read the post about the "unusual spotter meeting" @DUS and thought why not think about something in order to help all the various A.net photographers around the globe to recognize each other.
I know about the already available caps and T-shirts however wouldn't something like a small pin on logo , or a sticker (for camera cases, bumper sticker etc..) be more suitable.
Just a small logo pin...Think about it and contribute your opinion.

Patrick

I think, like a fraternity, we could have distinctive lapell pins. We could wear it to the airport, you know?

Yes thats what I was thinking of. There are quite a few A.net spotter "out there" and it would be a great experience to e.g. while traveling worldwide to have someone tap you on your shoulder saying "hey..you know A.net" because he saw the logo. Also , other people could ask and you could inform them about A.net...etc..etc..
Post Ideas people..

I visited Atlanta on Friday. I was hoping I'd run into another spotter. I went to Clark Howell Rd for a little bit and there was nobody there. Then I went to the south Garage. for 4 hours! There were a **few** people who came and went and one guy who stayed an hour or so. he was working for MARTA and had the scanner, headphones, and book showing what different types of planes look like. I asked him if he ever heard of a.net - he said yes, but i doubt he's anyone who is on this board regularly. Some kind of a.net identification would be great!!!

I've got over 100 pics to go thru - one made it past screening already!

Weather wasn't the greatest - but it was sufficient for shooting.

so anyway, a bicycle "cop" rode over to us and wanted us to go. he said that "customers" might complain. The other guy really got into his face - i kind of laid low. This "cop" was really just a Security Guard type. he said, "there's no law, there's no sign here saying i cant be here. you're gonna have to arrest me and then I'll sue you and the whole airport for violating my civil rights...and what about all the other people who come here? i come here at least once a week and see lots of people" I said, "well I am a customer too...I've got my parking ticket and I'm paying..."

Well, the "cop" reluctantly left us alone. When the other guy left, he told me, "don't let them run you off. you tell 'em you'll sue them. They can't do that to you..."

uh huh.

Planes were leaving on 9L so they were right in front of us. I really didn't want to go. I stayed till the light was no good anymore. I'm not going back till I work thru this load of photos. It would be great to meet up with some ATL spotters though.....

AIRLINERS.NET CREW
SITE ADMIN

Actually I'm currently working together with Cafepress.com to create some Airliners.net related merchandise. It's not finished yet and I hope to be able to add posters and stickers really soon. The store in still not officially up and running but fully functional and you should be able to order stuff. Note that these products are sold at our cost (we make no profit from sales) and are only for photographers.

I would very much appreciate if you could suggest new designs for the productes, I currently use the Airliners.net logo and a camera or photographer graphic - feel free to send me ideas or graphics you think should be used instead.

I guess a normal lapell pin with the Airliners.net logo used for the shirts etc.. would be great. Maybe anyone could draw a pin with the label on it ?

I've dealt with Cafepress several times, and their service to Europe is excellent.
Takes about 2 weeks for your order to arrive (if the item is in stock, obviously).

As to the items on offer:
I have a cap from them (no a.net cap, but same model). They're quite small, too small to comfortably fit an adult male with a normal sized head.
There is also a floppy microfiber hat. More convenient and provides shade in the neck as well. Example: http://www.cafepress.com/cp/store/productdetail.aspx?prodno=tca.1297584

Fine idea.

I suggest that the ideal products, apart from the obligatory t-shirts and baseball caps, are those that a spotter would need during a day hanging out at the airport. For instance:

- Lightweight, folding chair (logo on seatback)

- Drink cooler (already available in Johan's linked shop)

- Lead-lined film bag (like you find inside good camera bags, to minimize X-ray exposure)

- Lighters (I tend to smoke a lot while waiting for planes)

- A good camera bag, both shoulder and backpack versions, of a size and shape ideal to carry a couple of long lenses, 2 bodies, an airband receiver, plenty of film, and a pocket for a copy of the JP, schedules or other paperwork.

- And of course, a variety of small, medium, and large size stickers (small for sticking on camera bodies, large for the car bumper, and medium for computer screens and laptop cases.

Of course, some of these ideas might not be cheap. Getting a good camera bag company like Tamrac to make bags with the A-net logo on it will not be easy unless there is a minimum order of a hundred or so, but it's worth at least looking into.

Any other ideas?

Charles

Hi Peter,

I like the lens cap idea! It's cheap too. The only problem would be the variety of sizes necessary, I suppose - I have 77mm and 52mm lens caps, and I'm sure that others will have a dozen different sizes. But maybe a call to Hama or some other aftermarket supplier might be in order.

I like the product range very much so far. A few suggestions:

- An exclusive range of product for First Class members; this will definitely make first class membership more popular and increases the privileges of this group.

- Umbrellas always do well in merchandising

- I am not very enthousiastic about the current graphics (photographer with camera and the camera on a tripod) It looks like it was directly imported out of Clip Art from MS Word. I think a more stylized graphic would suit the merchandise better. I will try something later today.

- A very important aspect of merchandising is that it enhances brand identity. However there is no link with the current layout of the site (colours, logos and layout) When you choose to do that it enhances the identity of both the site and the merchandise

- Add the catchy page titles to the merchandise. I saw one on the license plate frame: "Stealth Fighters are for whimps" These would also work well on T-shirts etc. Examples of other ones are:
"Just like flying but without the penauts"
"The wings of the web"
"Home of the internet Jet set"
"Heavy metal never looked so good"
"A breath of fresh jet blast"

Hope this ads to a great range of A.net products.

Martin Boschhuizen

You know, a nice A.net t-shirt where you can have the logo on the front and back would be great. We could even hold a design contest. If it was a nice T-shirt I'd wear it whenever I spot or fly. The lapel pin might be easier. If you are a pilot or FA, why not make the cabin announcment: "And a very special welcome to all Elite Mileage members and A.net members.

Hey, the items in the shop are great so far but lighters and stickers are a very good idea. I have already an a.net sticker on my trolley but it is selfmade and looks not that good.

I think a.net needs to adopt a new and very distinctive logo. One that you can recognise from afar. The current one is maily made up of letters and the design is not particularly recognisable. I agree with PH-OTO that brand identity is very important.

Johan, perhaps we should have a competition to design a new and distinctive logo for a.net and also a subsidiairy logo for a.net photographers?

Whatever the new logo will be (if there is one) I think it should look noble. How about dark blue Polo Shirts with instead of Polo Airliners.net written on them. All other Ideas are great , I think it would pay off to ask the people here what quality they would expect from e.g. Camera Bags etc.. and what price do would pay for the goods. Anyway..I hope this whole thing gets somewhere...I want my Airliners.net thing  Big grin !!!
Keep it up. Regards,
Patrick

SITE ADMIN

Hello,

I'm glad to hear that most of you like the idea. I am sorry to say however that we will not be able to offer other colours or other types of merchandise unless Cafepress chooses to include it in their inventory. Their current plans are to include posters and stickers by this week or next and I am very much looking forward to that. If this goes well maybe we could start looking for a more complete supplier that are able to offer other colours than white and lens caps, baggage tags, folding chair, camera bag etc.

PH-OTO wrote:

I've got it ready to go, only waiting for the stickers and posters to make it official. As with the photographer merchandise, we sell it at "our cost".

Yeah, that's pretty much what it is. I'd be happy to include a new updated logo on the merchandise. Maybe it's time for another logo contest?  Smile

I'm not much of a graphics artist myself and getting some help from the users have proved very successful in the past.

Johan
