PHOTO SCREENER

Wanted to know what you guys (and gals) think. They are 1600 x 1200, so you if you are on dial-up you might not want to look. They are a Transair 707, a Trans International DC-10, a CP Air 737, a Hughes Airwest DC-9, and a Hughes Airwest 727.

These are all excellent old photos. I especially like the Hughes Airwest as I grew up with these aircraft. The only one that is questionable is the TIA DC-10 cause I can see alot of unfinished Adobe cloning tool streaks. They are very obvious and considering the age of the pics , the screeners might think the sky would be better left alone. Again I love the old aircraft pics! the east side of the north runway @ LAX. Not sure how many runways they have now but in '78 there was a north, and a south. North was used by most of the Int'l and heavy domestic flights. It was a rental car lot that never had any cars in it  Smile

Wow!!! There is more dust in there than ants in the anthill in my back yard! I can see where you would start off patiently but after a long time staring at the dots on the monitor, would speed it up near the end! Great job Clickhappy.

I'm also on my laptop, 83 degrees in my house, lithium ion burning my lap, and a sweaty trackpad for the clone tool. I will give it another whack at my desktop in the AM.

However, given you are editing the images anyway, I'd recommend you rotate them so that the horizon is level - the leans are particularly noticable on the first two. Given the age and probably rarity value of the pics (haven't checked the database to see if there are already others of the same subjects here), its probably not ESSENTIAL to level them, but on the other hand why not - you're already in photoshop or whatever, and leveling them takes very little time and produces an increase in the perceived quality.

From a screener's point of view, the "dirt & levels" give an immediate bad impression. It certainly changes my attitude towards a pic from "Looks OK, I'll accept this unless I see another problem" to "I don't want to accept this unless its really special".

The thing is, these are both aspects of a pic which are totally in the control of the photographer to rectify. Do people realise how important this sort of thing is? Never mind the screeners, this attention to detail is exactly the kind of thing which makes or breaks photo sales - except in special circumstances no decent magazine is going to publish anything less than pictures which are close to perfection from a technical point of view.

Also, I wonder why anyone would want to publicly display anything less than the best they can do - granted this changes over time, and I'm sure many of us cringe looking at our old pics.

There are certain photographers contributing to A.net who would find their acceptance rate sky-rocket is they just spent an extra few minutes in an image editor tidying the picture up.

As to these particular pics, I think they would scrape in on "rarity" - with a bit of work, most would get in on their own merits. Is their any particular reason for submitting at this size? Resizing down to the more standard 1024 x 768 would probably enhance sharpness and reduce grain.
