St. Maarten (SXM) Magic To Be Gone Soon

Just checked out some recent SXM pictures and have to say that the database at a.net as well as some other well known website for aviation photography has been flooded with rather dull and boring shots from SXM.

Don't want to post any examples here for obvious reason..

SXM is an absolutely gorgeous place to take awesome pics.
Why would someone go out there and take pictures of an a/c taxiing to the gate in overcast conditions or something similar.

Too bad, but I guess everyone is entiteled to go there and as long as the quality standards are good enough for a.net, the pic will be uploaded.

Just some thoughts for others to travel to SXM soon.

Vasco G.

you're preaching to the choir my friend, i've been bitching about that very thing for the last 9+ months now. It's sad, it's frusterating... the most creative place on earth is now subject to a miserable lack of originality; people who take a crappy "over the beach" shots and upload it just cuz it's a lock to get accepted-- here, everywhere.... those ramp shots, the backlit shots...etc... i wanna pull my hair out...

having said that, you cant beat the view in real life and theres not alot of places you can get that close to a landing 747 (or A340, whatever)

nothing lasts forever

Vasco, not everyone has access to the weathergods and can turn the weather on and off to suit his/her needs.
Also, many people now shoot just to get pictures on here, and they're used to shooting 50mm sideshots only because that's just about the only thing you can get easily accepted these days.

Or maybe people are shooting while waiting for a connecting flight and have no time to go out and shoot in other spots...

If you personnally spent the sort of money it takes to get to SXM, and the weather was overcast all the time you were there, what would you do? Shoot pics anyway, or just bury your head in the sand and wished you hadn't spent the money? I know that if I went there and the weather wasn't so good, I'd still have to shoot pics. And if I felt some of them were good enough for airliners.net then I'd upload them, and too bad for the folks that had been lucky enough to go there when the weather was great if I upset thier sensibilities.

Contrary to what Vasco and Chris say, there's been a fair few pics from SXM rejected recently - sadly, some folks think its acceptable to get the people on the beach real sharp, whilst the airplane passing overhead is blurry. Hey - I just tell them to upload them to www.peopleonthebeachatsxm.com instead!!!

Takes all sorts I guess!!!

Here is a simple fair solution = you don't like other ppl's shots from SXM - You go out and show us how its done!

No, that wasn't what I meant, but you said...

Point was, I think Chris has already done this - checkout the database. Big grin

Well, I already thought no one would jump on the wagon....and now 7 replies within moments.

Anyway, yes I would have burried my head in the sand and cried for 2 months, if I had spent the money and the weather had been shitty.

SXM is know for the excellent low approaches over the beach. Angle, light and composition, three words or should I say creativity.

Even on a dull overcast day, something can be done......

Maybe it is just me....

Vasco G.

p.s. I will be there someday, maybe not this year, but aiming for next year and then you'll see what I am talking about!!!!!

Ummmmm.... maybe I'm just stupid but AFAIC SXM is not one of the most creative airports, I think its quite the opposite.

The only thing you can really use is looking down the runway, and trying to time taking pictures of airplanes with nudey women.

There are more airports right under your noses that are good creative places (for creative minds) but if we all just saw approach shots from SXM we'd get very bored.. And people can upload whatever they want from whatever airport, if someone goes to SXM and takes some 50mm ramp shots or pictures of aircraft taxying in dull weather, you should be glad that they haven't stolen your creative ideas. In many ways that should be better...

And to be honest, EVERY airport gets boring, SXM doesn't hold the excitement for me that it did when I first saw a picture from there, but I think you are just blaming that on people who take photos that aren't creative enough, or different (which is fine, happens all the time.!).

Well said Dan - 1st of all the beach shots stunned me but now we have some SXM pics of low quality cos its SXM and we have lost some of the magic so ppl try other shots

joe, i too love the sxm 'ramp-style' shots a refreshing change - like your Apple Vacations A320 if my mind serves me correctly

Do what YOU wnat, not what a.net views want

Your points about creativity are right on EGGD!!

I also agree with Vasco... dull overcast shots should not be making it into the database unless it's truly something special. I'm just baffled by some of the things that get accepted...

Vasco, if you wait too long unfortunately you're gonna miss out on any 747 in there- af already stopped (340 is ok but definetely not remotely the same), klm will soon, corsair's 742's are aging though the 743's may last a while longer- and after that- thats pretty much it.

As far as weather- if you want a virtual guarantee of mostly sun go in the winter- if you want to get screwed- go in the late spring and all summer- its rainy season.

LGW - My thoughts exactly!!!

I even have it all planned out, ask them to pose in front of a couple of aircraft, get a bit chatty, maybe ask to reveal a bit more, then take them round to the terminal building and voila!!!!
