Let me guess: You're flying NW???

Aren't there a lot better places to go than those two??

I guess if you had to chose, I'd say MSP since it's easier to spot at.

Last time I checked, neither airport was really good for photos. MSP has a viewing lot, but it is impossible to get photos from there because a high fence and a parking lot obstructs the view.

1.) You need to get a life......airport vacation what's up with that.
2.) neither MSP or DTW
3.) If you want to go somewhere exciting go to ORD, LAX, SFO, JFK ....
there you have at least a diversity of planes, unless you are a big NW fan.

DTW has a wonderful new terminal, but on the inside, it is very UN-friendly for photographers. The glass (which is plentiful) is screened with "dots" - much like a printer's half-tone setup. So, you can't take anything close-up.

As for spotting on the outside, I'm not so sure about where to go, but I concur with others that there ain't a whole lot to shoot unless you like the red and white of NWA. Go to O'Hare.

OK folks, the reason I want ot go to DTW or MSP is because I want to visit a huib of an airline that STILL FLIES THE BOEING 727. And I've been to ATL. Believe me, I was planning to visit ORD, but when UA suddenly discarded their 727 aircraft, there is now no point, I'll wait a while.

Vasco, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT???!?!??!?!!!? I didn't expect to hear such negative comments on a freaking aviaiton forum--the photography section no less!!!!

YEAH, I'm going to buy a plane ticket, fly somewhere to an airport, and DO THAT AIRPORT, so to speak. Walk around the gates, the perimeter, you know what we plane nuts do!!!! And you know what?? I'M GOING TO ENJOY MYSELF!!!!!!!

Relax Dude!

There is no negativity in the post at all. WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

Still I would go to LAX, I am sure you will see tons of 727 there.......

Mark, I assume most of your MSP pics are before 9/11. How is the situation nowadays.

The new Northwest World Gateway terminal in Detroit is great for spotting, but not for photography, because of the tinted windows. I just now got back from DTW where after a trip to see friends north of Detroit I explored the 3 concourses for 2 hours. If you are "hardcore" and take down tail numbers like me, you'll be happy. The windows, despite the tint, are very large and provide great views of aircraft at gates. And the tram gives you an overhead view of the gates. I'm not sure what the authorities will do/say if you waltz around their perimeter, I did it last year but that was pre 9/11.

As far as DTW goes you should be able to get some pushback shots right outside the front door of the new terminal. The question is how long they will let you stand out there. Haven't been up there but you should be able to get some shots from the new parking deck as well.

There is a long term parking lot next to the General Motors hangar that has a taxiway right next to it Too close for widebodies. Used to shoot there all the time but of course that was pre 9/11.

There are lots of places along Middlebelt road to shoot landings. Best time is weekends as a lot of the places there are closed and you should be able to shoot from their parking lots without being bothered.

In addition to NW, Delta and Champion are still running 727s into DTW.

Come to Newark...

Riding around in the monorails affords some great views and if I remember correctly, they take you to all the terminals and the parking lots....I remember one of the parking lots affording great views for pictures.

Definately come to Newark... Although NWA rarely flies the 727 here (do they even still have them) anymore, you will be able to spot some interesting aircraft among the jungle of Continental planes.

Or, if you want a real treat, fly jetBlue into JFK and rent a car and drive around the JFK complex.....there are so many spots, I cant even begin. My favorite is the old customs building named the Halmar building. Its apart from the airport complex but when you find it, its a great great place to shoot and watch.

The other side of the coin is that you also get to spend time in wonderful NYC!!!!! What could beat that?  Smile

By the way, I got an email from jetBlue saying there was a fare sale from FLL-JFK but I dont know when. Fares from $59 each way, I believe.

Anyway.... do what you will....but I think NYC is the place you are looking to go!

727Lover,

Very little should have changed at MSP after 9/11 because most of the spots are in public areas. Most of the spots, except for the terminal shooting, are evening spots. Here are the main spots you'd be interested in:

Terminal Parking Garage: Arrivals and departures on 30R/12L and 30L/12R

Ft. Snelling Nat'l Cemetery: Arrivals and departures on 30L/12R

Super America (Post Rd): Arrivals on 30L

Terminals: Great if you have a ticket

Observation deck: Don't bother with it, there is too much window glare. But
But here's one

There are others spots, but the above would be your best bets.

Those look great Mark, Thank you.

2 questions:

1. My current plan is to fly in on Airtran. Now from what I've heard, I should be able to walk down to the Northwest gates without passing security? Is this true?

2. What zoom are you using on the parking deck?

JBLUA320, I lived in Connecticut for 3 years 1992-1995, so I've travelled to the NY airports many times, but it has been a while. I've got NY on my radar screen for springtime  Smile

727, if you come up drop me an email and I can dig up some more detailed directions to some kick-butt spotting places at all 3 majors.

JBLUA20, that will be fine. Like I said I'm very familiar with all 6 NY area airports. This will be the first time since 1997,so I know thinges have changed. I've been skiddish about New York since Sep 11, figured cops will shoot first & ask questions later. Big grin Like I said, it will probably next spring! See ya!!

727LOVER,

1. Yes. All of the terminals are connected to each other inside the secure area. If you are flying in on AirTran you will have no problem accessing other terminals.

2. Most of those shots are with a 75mm - 300mm zoom. Some of my early ones (pre 2001) were done with a 210mm zoom.
