Heyas!

I need help. I will keep this simple and I am sorry if this has been discussed, if you can point me to a prior discussion I will be open to that.

Money aside, should I buy the Minolta DiMAGE 7i or Sony DSC-707? Or for about $1000 is there a better camera yet. I am looking to buy asap, so any help is great.

Also I am looking to buy from Ritz Cameras in person for $999.99 can I beat this price? What has your experiences been with Ritz? Ry

So having read all those, can you provide me with a clear idea which one to buy?

It depends on the money you have. There are several cameras to buy, two days ago I got the new Coolpix from Nikon. Nikon offers great products, high quality, excellent features and more. My second digi-cam is a Sony Cyber-shot with 3,2 MegaPixels, works great for picturing planes standing on the ground. I haven't heard really good comments on the Minolta, before buying the Nikon the Minolta was also in my mind. I searched in the Internet and found out that this camera was build on the first digital method of taking pictures, sofar, too old in my opinion. The design also doesn't make my happy, too blurry, too creative. The top-cameras are, of course, D30, D60 and D100. There you can change the objectives. It took me about two month to make a decision, so, take the time, it's a lot of money you spend here! for other questions don't hesistate writing me an e-mail. Best regards, Markus  Wink/being sarcastic

I would avoid the Minolta. Although the bugs (there were a lot of them) were supposedly fixed with the D7i, I would still be weary about these cameras....

I own the F707 and it's a great camera, capable of doing many things. The only limitation on it is the zoom, which is 5x, or only 190mm. At times this is not enough for aviation photography.

Another solid camera for the same price is the Nikon Coolpix 5700 with an 8x zoom lens, which is 280mm, a little more suited to aviation photography. This looks like a great camera, and in fact I would have bought this if it was around when I bought my F707.... dammit!

Another alternative is the Olympus C720UZ or C700UZ (I think the 700 is discontinued... but check it out). The 720 offers 320mm zoom while the 700 offers a 400mm zoom I believe. Big zooms, but only 2 or 3 megapixels and I'm not too sure about Olympus digital cameras... but check it out anyway.

Bottom line: I'd probably choose the Nikon coolpix 5700, but it's up to you... I'd suggest going to the camera store and trying out all of your candidates.

Shawn, I've seen many people who are extremely happy with the Minolta. It's a bit slow (I suppose that's the 'bugs' you're talking about) and uses quite a bit of electricity, but image quality is superb for a digicam.

I have the Minolta D7 and find it very good - the battery problems are not huge if you use 1800ma NIMH batteries and 'condition' the batteries. Image quality is fine - it is a 5mp digital camera. Not tried the D7i but have heard the autofocus speed has been improved. Have also heard that there is a fix for the D7 to bring some of its bugs closer to the D7i

IMO, two attributes make the DiMAGE 7i preferable to the Sony 707.

Handling -- the operations and handling of the 7i is very SLR-like. I especially appreciate the manually-operated zoom ring on the lens, which allows you to zoom to the focal length you want as quickly or as slowly as you want. It beats any push-button-operated zoom action.

Batteries -- while the AA-sized NiMH's in the 7i may not last as long as the lithiums in the Sony, at least that is a commonly available type of battery. Sony's lithium batteries are proprietary designs, which could potentially leave you high and dry should they decide to halt production of the type you need. This has happened to me recently, as the battery type that powers my Sony DSC-505 suddenly became out of stock everywhere, and dealers confirming that Sony has stopped production. So now, I'm walking around with just one middle-aged battery, and when it finally dies, so will my camera.
