Does this just look worse than it actually is? Looks like something dirtbikes would ride on not airplanes.

It's incredibly difficult/expensive to get a 1-2 mile stretch of land to be even remotely level, especially in places with "difficult" terrain. At least it makes for a fun takeoff/landing!

I just knew from the title that EGBB would be the airport being talked about.
However, I have used that airport many times, and the runway is just like any other from inside the plane.

Craig.

Avalon (Catalina Island, CA)is said to have a mean slope on it's runway. If I remember correctly, tons and tons of rocks had to be dumped to fill a space between two hills. Anyway, I dont get why construction attempts weren't made at Birmingham to get the runway more "airplane friendly."

Not really Ben.

I reproduce that comment here...

"Lined up ready to depart runway 33...or should that be roller-coaster 33...?"  Wink/being sarcastic

Cheers,
Dean

There is a downhill (or uphill depending on which way you depart) runway at STL, kinda wild!

I think it that it looks a bit more extreme than it actually is because of the lens etc. used....

It is as bad as it looks in real life, but from a plane its no different than a "normal" runway.  Big grin

SHAMROCK, I watched a Space shuttle program on TLC or Discovery and they stated how the runway at Kennedy Space station is the most level runway in the world and only elevation change is due to the curvature of Earth. Though I'd share with anyone interested in your little "challenge."  Smile

SHAMROCK.... a shameless plug for one of my shots... it shows a fairly level runway... but what can you compare it with? the UN-level hills???

well... my runway is worse!! Unfortunetely, I can't get a viewpoint that is as good as that, only one straight down which don't look pretty spectacular. This is relatively even!!  Smile

That's a great shot there, David! And also a nearly dead-flat runway. I think I'll have to eat my words! hehe  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
