Hello guys.

I would like to know what you think of the new Fuji S2? I know we have some guys here that already have one, like Don Boyd comes to mind.

I would like to hear from the S1 guys like Andy, Glenn and anybody else that has the S1. I have been looking at the results of the S2, but they don't really look like what I thought they would. I mean 12.1 MP! The quality should be awesome.

Well anyway lets hear it.............. Smile

BTW, Don those latest photos look pretty nice!

Dmitry: thanks for your comments. Bear in mind that the 12.1MP is interpolated and you need to read the S2's review on dpreview.com for the technical aspects of how they do that.

Also bear in mind that image display on a CRT at 1000 pixels wide by 600+ high in low resolution JPG format is not the primary objective here, at least not for me. The 4256 by 2848 pixel TIF's that I get from shooting in RAW format and then converting them into TIF's produce some really great detailed large prints at true 300dpi. That is why I bought the camera but being able to get them onto airliners.net is a definite fringe benefit.

Don,

being an absolut newbie in this field, I am printing and digital imaging, can you explain me something:

"The 4256 by 2848 pixel TIF's that I get from shooting in RAW format and then converting them into TIF's produce some really great detailed large prints at true 300dpi"

How large of a print can you produce at this resolution?
Can you describe the process?

Thanks
Vasco G.

vasco:
I think you get the size of the print by dividing the resolution (4256 2848) by 300 so the size of the print should be 14 inch by 9 inch at 300 dpi.
Hope this helps
Peter

Well Don, can you produce images in the same quality that Joe does with his D60? I love the D60 quality, hardly any grain visible. You know the SAA he added into the JP collection? Well thats what I am talking about.

Dmitry,

I am also a proud new owner of an S2. So far, it has exceeded my expectations...I just wish I could get out and use it more often!  Smile Yeah, its slow and plasticy (just like every other prosumer SLR) compared to the D1Hs and 1Ds of the world, but it more than makes up for those factors with output quality. Image quality is top notch, but if you are just going to be using it for web images, any of the current SLRs (S2, D60, D100) will work well.

Have you read all of the online reviews about the S2? The consensus is that the S2 is the current prosumer champ in most categories, including the most important one, image quality.

Here are a few reviews:

Thanks Peter for answering Vasco's question on print size/resolution - you are correct. You didn't say it but obviously smaller pixel sizes coming out of other brand digital cameras will not get you true 300ppi at the 8x10 size which is what I'm after. You can boost your ppi using Genuine Fractals or other software image manipulators but I was after the true 300dpi for prints and the higher image detail. Upsizing resolution generally almost always degrades the image quality from what I have read. Now whether I screw it up or not in the RAW converter and/or Photoshop is another matter for another day. You can certainly make or break a photo in Photoshop as most of you know.

Thanks Aric for your post with the great review URL's so I didn't have to answer Dmitry's World War III question about the S2 Pro's image quality compared to Joe's D60. Joe's offline for a while due to a shooting trip to Corfu so I could take advantage of him now but I'd catch holy hell from him when he gets back online. Joe is the best and the D60 is the best - just ask Joe if you don't believe me. So what if the technical detailed reviews from professional evaluators say differently? That's all I'll say for now. I'm not interested one iota in whose camera is better debates - the reviews are most important to me in addition to seeing the quality of what I'm getting. I took a big gamble buying the S2 Pro before the great reviews came out but seeing the comparison examples of the S2, the D60 and the D100 on the Japanese websites convinced me back in June.

And by the way, the D60 that I ordered in April finally arrived two weeks ago and I managed to resell it quickly for a $250 profit which buys me another 1GB IBM Microdrive for my S2 Pro. Thank you Canon........ : ))

Thanks Don. But, if you had the choice again. And, you had all the Canon gear, would you take the D60 or the S2?

What I think it is: just takes a bit of playing around with it to get a super high quality image. True or not from your perspective?

D,

just read your post again, please. This does not make any sense what you just wrote:

If he had all Canon gear, why would he buy a camera with a Nikon mount?

To Dmitry - if I had had a huge investment in Canon lenses I would have kept the D60 instead of selling off everything and switching to the S2 Pro and the Nikon and compatible lens line. If there hadn't been such a huge backlog of orders for the D60 I would have received it in April and then bought a couple of expensive Canon lenses, before the S2 came out in late June/early July. By then I would have been obligated to stay with Canon.

It was just a matter of timing. Fortunately I only had one Canon zoom which I'll continue to use with the one Canon body that I own.
