Hello all,
I will most likely be down in Orlando Saturday and Sunday, and possibly Monday or if not I will go to the theme park, on Tuesday I will probably head down to Tampa for some spotting, then on Wednesday, the long drive to the metro Miami area (FLL/Opa Locka/MIA) until probably Jan 02 or somewhere around there, as I would have to be in Orlando for the flight home on the 4th. Anyone up for some spotting?? Post here!

Jeremy

I'm actually going to be passing through MIA next Wednesday afternoon. However, due to a tight schedule, my plan after arrival is to go straight over to the AA terminal, grab some pics of a few AA MD-11's/A300's and then I have to make the drive up to West Palm Beach.

Otherwise, it would have been fun to meet you there for some photography. MIA is actually one of my favorite places for this...that service road along the south side(?) of the airport kicks ass.

Have fun!

Let me know what day and time you are going to be shooting over at FLL and we can meet.

Scooter! Just so you know there and not many MD-11 flights out of MIA, most of those flights are 777s now.

Dang it. So where does AA run them from now? DFW? I hardly ever see them at LAX. Oh well...I don't have a single shot of an AA 777 so I guess thats ok. Maybe I'll get a shot of that retro 738 while I'm there too (nah - not with my luck).

Thanks for the update...

AA has about 3 flights that leave between 7:00am to about 1:00pm and UA has 2 that leave around 6:50 to 7:40am, But they mostly take off from 9Left and it is hard to get good shots from it.   But!!!! You can get some great belly shots if you know were to go.

I have not seen the 737 retro there yet  but The 757 Retro stops in from time to time.

The 737 Retro should be in Friday morning according to a sked given to my by an AA employee. It's actually in the Civil Aviation Forum under: 737 Retro Schedule, or something like that...

hi,
i will be at MIA for a day in early february, and i was trying to find out all the information i could about spotting places there...what is this service road on the southside? Does it give a good view of takeoffs? or landings? if somebody could help me out here it would help tremendously...and if any of you want to join me then you are most certainly welcome!! i will have a car so i can go anywhere...i also heard that the hotel in the airport is a good place, the observation deck there, but do you need a long lens for that? i have at longest a 500mm lens, 70-300mm, and 28-105mm..

thanks!!

OK here we go!

MIA.....9R/27L is the south runway it 11,000ft so it is mostly used for landings in the morning, little use in the day, a lot of use from 5:00 to about 10:30pm. For most of the runway you are about 25ft from the fence and about 150ft from the RW, thats pretty close. There are NO camera holes in the fence! and you CAN NOT use a ladder. There is a dirt lot at the west end of 9R that you can get some GREAT shots at. There are some good places to get shots all over the AP. But they are hard to get to and easy to kicked out of. If you are going to shoot from the hotel you MUST have a 400mm or better. My next post will be about FLL

Ok here we go again,

FLL.....The main runway at Ft Lauderdale is 9L/27R it is 9,300ft and is in constant use most of the time it is used as 9L. This is one of the better "small" airports to shoot at in the US. There is a parking lot at the south west end of 9L. One of the nice things about FLL is at the lot they have Tower and Approch on a PA system 24hrs a day. There are about 4 nice camera holes in the fence so you don't need a ladder. You can use a ladder if you want to and you will not get bugged by OPS. There some nice planes for our friends from EU and the UK to see. Such as FedEx DC-10s A300 new A310s, Delta 767-400s 737-200 L1011s and sometimes 777-200s, AirTran 717s, BBJs, JetBlue, and many diffrent America West.
If you have any Qs for me just ask!

Yes and No At MIA for most of 9R the side of the road is only about 2.5 feet wide so you can't really park there : ( but at the the dirt lot I was telling you about you can stand on your car. Just watch out for AirCops and don't fall off.

So does anyone want to join me? Beginning of February, I will have an exact date later on, but the probable dates are either the 8th or 9th of Feb. I'd like to get some pics of the international heavies and AA A300s & 738s at MIA, and Delta L-1011s and 764s at FLL...I'm driving from marco island on the other side of florida (on the gulf coast) early that morning then spend an entire day spotting then going back. Anyone wants to join just drop a line or write me an email (jderden777@hotmail.com)

peace,
jonathan derden
