Well I missed out on the 'big' show (Airliners 2002) when it was held here in June, so I am certainly going to try to mke this little get together (though I may be in the process of a re-location at the time). As for spotting, well I believe that Houston is fairly spotter/photographer friendly. Checkout some of the pics in the db.

That is off runway 27, which is located off Rankin Rd, east of the airport. I see by your age in your profile that you will probably be with a relative, thus not driving yourself. That being the case and assuming that you are not flying, here are some brief instructions on how to get there.

From the Holiday Inn (where the show is being held) take JFK Blvd towards the airport. The first intersection you approach will take you past Beltway 8, continue up to the next major intersection which will be Greens Rd. At this point you will need to make a right turn onto Greens Rd continue down Greens onto the next intersection, this will be Rankin Rd, make a left here. This road will take you the observation area. Just follow it until you see the runway and the obs area on the opposite side of Rankin.

While our obs official and semi-official areas while more numerous (there is another on the west side of the field, off 15R/33L-15L/33R which is great for rotation shots, the parking areas at C and A/B provide a nice panoramic view of the terminals airport) are not as nice as Founders Plaza, but in my humble opinion provide for more dramatic photography as well as spotting, due to the closeness of of the action as well as the laid back attitude towards photographers/spotters by local authorities. I just wish we had a little more widebody and int'l action.

BTW most of the Euro flights arrive around 1-3:30 PM and depart from 4-5:35 PM. Check the winds before heading out. If they are blowing out from the east (SE/NE) the 27/26 will not be used for arrivals, rather 8/9 will be the arrival runways and at this point there are no effective viewing areas for these runways, though I suppose you could view from the cargo area and view arrivals onto 27.

have fun,

Thomas

Is it a long drive from Houston to Dallas? A great shooting trip might be to fly into Houston, rent a car, and drive to Dallas...

Also, what about shooting at HOU (Hobby) Airport? Any good spots?

Well if you are doing the speed limit, then the drive is about 4 hours, I usually get there in 3 1/2, then I normally do 80mph.

You know I have been planning for what seems like years to shoot HOU but never have gotten around to it. I suppose I had better get on the stick.
