Hi!
Has anyone of you got request for usage of your photos on a flight sim CD? if yes? How did you handle them. Did you charge the user or did you provide them for free? Any info would be appreciated.

I receive a request for 2 photos, will send them scanned for free and just asked credit as the photographer and a copy of the CD.
Maybe I should charge him but money isn't everything.

I've gotten those before. My policy is if the author will benifit from the sales of the CD, then I should be entitled to a certain amount of money.

Don't let them get free stuff.

Money isn't everything but if your photo(s) will be used by someone for profit you should also profit from it's use. We all work hard and spend a lot of time (and money) doing this, we should be well rewarded. Also, it's helps the photogs that actually do this for a living (not me). Some companies are refusing to pay for usage because they know they might be able to get it for free if they keep asking other photogs, which isn't fair to the ones that earn (or try to) a living.

Just my thoughts, of course.

If you are trying to make a "living" out of commercial aviation photography, then you should find another job.

Mark,

I agree, it's tough doing just "Commerical Aviation Photography" but what I was saying probably covers all lines of photography. When people start giving away photos, it's make is very very difficult for (any) photographer to sell his/her work.

BTW-I don't do this for a living and probably won't ever try, it's just too much work and would probably take the "fun" part out that I enjoy a great deal.

Hi.

Yeah I reseved one of those messages about one of my pictures. I also concidered charging him, but as I only do this for a hobby, and he wanted to know if i would donate it, I let him have it for free. He promised to make sure the name got at my picture.

I think it is wise to give some pictures away for free in the begining, and THEN start charging. In other words, get a good reputation (sp?).

This is my picture donation:

To Michael I have to say that I'm not giving away photos, I've sold photos in the past and I'll sell photos in the future but in this particular case, I thought the best deal between me and the author would be to send the scanned photos for free.

I don't take every requests in the same way, for me each case is a different case and after thinking in this one I decided not to charge.

For Thomas these are the photos in question

Luis,

Hope you didn't take my posts wrong, they weren't directed at you. Just comments in general.

For a CD-ROM, I wouldn't expect much payment either. For exposure I might have let him use a few photos myself as long as it wasn't a "Royalty Free" CD. I totally agree, you have to take (and handle) each request differently. Airliners.net is a great site that generates some very nice offers and it would be nice that every photographer on this site gets what they deserve. Yes, 99% of us are in it for the "fun" but it doesn't hurt to make good money as well. I just closed a deal today that's one of my biggest and have a.net to thank. Today, is a good day

No problem Michael, I also hope you didn't take my reply as if I was angry, I'm sorry but my english doesn't permit me to elaborated answers so I'm very direct wich may sound a kind of rude but belive me it was just a simple explanation.

Glad to know it was a good day for you   Yes all of this thanks to Airliners.net

all the best
Luis
