Both Tokina and Tamron have a high quality pro-line that is actually quite good. Though I haven't used their lens that much to give you a deatiled discription.

BTW- I heard that Tokinas high end brand are designed by former Nikkor people using Hoya glass.

At worst, you screw up and die.

Tokina: certainly.
Tamron: I don't like them, period. Generally considered to be at the bottom of the genepool of lensmakers.
Phoenix: down there with Tamron. B-name brand of Sigma for low-cost retail chains. Similar design but lower quality optics to the cheaper Sigma consumer models.

Stick with Tokina ATX or Sigma EX lenses for optimal quality unless you can afford the AF-S Nikkors or L Canons (or the equivalent pro line of your camera brand).

Tokina was indeed started by Nikon lensdesigners with the explicit goal of creating lenses that are of almost equal quality to Nikkors at a substantially lower price. At this they've succeeded.
They do get their glass from Hoya, who are also the source of glass for Canon (so if you say Tokina uses inferior glass remember you're saying the same of Canon  Big thumbs up).

Transparent glass  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

This is from the FAQ at their website:
A: Yes, ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass is a new glass material developed recently by Hoya (the glass maker). It has even lower dispersion characteristics than SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass, which Sigma has been using in its APO lenses (and some non-APO lenses as well) for many years now. It has other advantageous properties as well. Sigma is the first camera-maker to use this new glass it its lenses. It is presently used in the three EX APO ultra-telephoto lenses (300mm f/2.8, 500mm f/4.5 and 800mm f/5.6).

Guess Sigma also uses Hoya glass for at least part of their lineup.
