Hi all,

I know this lens is not being produced but I'm thinking ahead since it's the time for the Christmas wish lists (not for this year though!); does anyone know if and then when this lens might become available, and at what price it would retail approximately?

I know there's a lot of 'if's' and 'but's' in my question, but I'm sure there must be some rumours rife  Smile

Thanks
Paul

I only heard that combining IS with this great lens would be putting the 2.8 L IS version almost out of business... The justification for spending the extra money would be gone...

I agree to some extent, I guess that would depend on the planned retail price for an F4 L IS though. It sure would be an attractive product if/when it became available.

Not sure this makes sense - adding IS to the f4 would increase both its size and weight which I think is the main reason the target market (pros) would select this lens over the 2.8. After all, in this sector, keen pricing is not a big factor.

Currently the f4 is about UK 750, the f2.8 IS 1700 - if the addition of IS to other lenses is anything to go by, I'd figure an f4 IS would retail at UK 1200 - my guess is that most pros would go for the extra stop or choose to do without the IS

Cheers

Thanks Colin for that. Park Cameras will currently sell you one for £637, which almost puts Canon's highest quality glass into the reach of the 'common man'...(although still no where near the US$600 price tag in the US) hence why I've started looking more seriously of late at my future equipment plans  Smile

Do you know if there are any plans in the pipeline for a superseeding model to be released in the near future, or is the current F4 L 70-200 model likely to be around for a few more years yet?

Cheers
Paul

I'm not aware of any plans to discontinue or update the f4 - but then, Canon always play their cards close to their chest and seldom give advance info. What info I have gathered (talking to Canon reps a couple of weeks back) suggests that we might be seeing some more lenses featuring their new DO technology - this could mean a new much smaller and lighter 70-200 ... but it wouldn't be cheap!

As to the prices - yes, street price can be a bit less than the figures I quoted (I think got my 2.8 IS for £1500). Still a lot of dosh though whichever way you slice it!

Cheers,

Colin
