I'm looking to buy that one when I have $$ (xmas kicked my rear end this year...plus a new car....etc lol). The price is pretty good, $279.....seems like a good scanner.

Looks like a good scanner. I have it's predecessor, the Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II and I am very happy with it.

Yet, the Scan Dual II cost me more than the Scan Dual III. Mine was $369.99 I believe and I'm finding the Scan Dual III as low as $279.99?

They seem very similar. Not entirely sure what's the difference.

From what I can see, it seems that it has an improved scanning software and USB 2.0 compatible. Anyone catch anything else that's changed?

Regards

How new is this Dual III?

At $279.99, this might be a last minute change to my xmas list lol.

Bits of color, and a few other minor adjustments were made from what I can tell. Anything will beat my worn out S20!

I have used the Minolta Scan Dual II for two years now and I'm completely satisfied with it.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The differences to the newer Scan Dual III which was released only a few months ago are an upgrade to USB 2.0, an updated scanning software that now includes software to restore older slides/negatives and to remove dust and fingerprints. A new version of Photoshop is also supplied. While the Scan Dual II had Photoshop 5.0 LE the Scan Dual III has Photoshop Elements in its package.

The thing I like on this scanner expecially is that it has great dynamics and no noise on dark areas. I scanned a slide yesterday, put it on ZIP100 and printed it today at work with Agfa d-lab.2 at size 30*45cm. The picture was razor sharp and almost grainless. I don't believe many digital cameras (if any) can do the same quality!  Big thumbs up

When I scan slides, any dark areas look really nasty on the scan (do all scanners do that, or just my P.O.S. S20?). This scanner is really starting to sound like a good deal...

Serge,

Not true at all.

I can do up to 16 passes with my Scan Dual II (using VueScan).

Of course, I never do more than 2 passes, I've found it unnecessary.

Ohhhh... Ok, I stand corrected then.  Big grin

I was just reading the factory comparison so they must have meant with their stock software, not with VueScan Big grin

I guess there really isn't much of a difference then...

Serge

What about using Photoshop 7 as the scanning program? Will it be better? Or do you need that software that comes with the scanner to scan, then import the scanned pictures to Photoshop and edit it? (how many 'scan' word did I mentioned already?? Big grin Big grin)

Casper,

I don't think you can use Photoshop 7 as a replacement for the scanning software (at least you can't use Photoshop 6). You'll need either the software that is delivered with the scanner or a third-party software like VueScan or SilverFast.

After the scanning software has saved the original scan to your hard disk you can open the scan in Photoshop.

Seems wierd to reply to my own self....

Anyway, u can use photoshop to scan, but it basically uses the VueScan application again since the VueScan system provides the TWAIN drivers that basically powers the scanner... what it does is that instead of transferring the data from the scanner back to the VueScan application, it transfers it back to Photoshop and from there you can carry out the various editing required...

Cheers
