thinking about taking a three day trip down to the Bay Area. How are SFO and OAK for photography?

Thanks.

Royal,

Everything you need to know about the airports in the Bay Area can be found at Golden Gate airliners at http://flygga.tripod.com/, the website put together by Richard Silagi and Ben Wang for planespotters. You'll have much better luck at SFO and SJC than at OAK.

thanks, that is a great website! I was hoping to see (and snap) the North American 757 that flys in and out of OAK, and the Ryan International DC-10.

thanks Jason.

I am going to be packing a 600mm lens with me, will this reach arrivals on the far runway @ SFO?

Yes 600mm will be more than adequate to shoot the 28's from Bayfront Park. Air Nikon has some shots taken with his D100 from Bayfront. Try searching for those.

I will be there on January 17-20. I am staying at the Marriot Hotel next to the airport, I guess you can get a good view of the 28's and the Bay, so I requested (they even make you pay more $$$!) a room facing the runways.

Bayfront park in a nice place to shoot. I normally go down there once a week.

Good Luck

Royal,
Instead of the Marriott check out the Westin at SFO...i stayed there back in july/august when i was on vacation...
the westin is right there at Bayfront park (you can practically walk out the front door of the hotel and be at the park) and you can also get a room facing the 28s or a room facing the 1s (you can see full length 1R/L)...we got a room at the marriott but i liked the westin much better....i had to hike a ways from the marriott over to the park but when i stayed at the westin i just walked out the front door, crossed the street and i was there....much better than missing a UAL 744 in real nice morning light due to the long walk from the marriott!

anyway, good luck and i'm sure you can get some interesting shots from bayfront with 600mm, you could definitely get some good ones from the hotel with that lens too....
