I had planned on taking the third week off of work to go down to FLL and MIA. I have been trying to get down there the past few years. I've never been there before. I was really looking forward to visiting these two airports...then I heard about the lot closure at FLL.
Should I still go or save the FF miles? I want quality photography spots (I'm not interested in just spotting). Any close up spots remaining at FLL or MIA? Whenever I visit a new airport I usually know somebody from the area that I can contact for information, but I honestly don't know anyone from the area. I'm just wondering if I should save this trip for next year (though things can only get worse...maybe this is the best it's going to be for a while).

MIA reportedly still OK (photo holes and El Dorado), FLL obviously less so though I believe that the parking garage at FLL is still OK (not "close up" there though). No doubt some further reports about the situation at MIA will emerge over the next week or so as the annual slide trading convention takes place there next week.

MIA is very much open for photography. For the past several weeks there are 8-10 people on the weekends at the photography holes at 9L/12, the authorities have not been any problem. On the other side I have heard that the Eldorado area is also OK, if you are lucky and there are no boxcars.
I don't frequent FLL much, but as other discussions here have indicated, the holes are gone and the old parking area closed. It looks like the parking garage is the only option there.

Mark, I know I'll be there and Brian might as well. It'd be nice to meet up again.
I'll arrive on Friday and leave on Sunday. Along with many other photogrtaphers, there will also be a ramp tour of MIA on Saturday.

i'll be joining the crowd down at MIA this year also with a buddy of mine....it's a bummer what's happened at FLL and i would've liked to do some shooting there but then again MIA isn't such a bad place either and i'll be content with doing most of my shooting there

I have just returned from a week at MIA, did not run into any problems at all. Holes adjacent to the Customs bldg. are still available with a nice sign on the fence that states "Photography allowed in this area only, ladders prohibited". This makes it an officially sanctioned area for photography, though a ladder would have been nice for some arrivals. There are now 5 "official" holes and 6 other holes available. I did have a very minor problem at El Dorado, police have apparently been asked by the store to enforce their lots "no parking" signs, officer just asked me to move my vehicle onto the street at the deadend barrier and I never got bothered again. The biggest problem encountered the whole time were the trains that kept parking on the tracks at this location.
FLL's lot was still closed, tried the 7th floor of the parking garage, but you will need about 400 mm for arrival/departures. You can get shots of JetBlue and Continental going to and from their gates directly below you with normal lenses however.

I have heard mixed things about FLL's status...one person has told that it was gone forever while another has told me that it was to reopen on Jan 1...so frankly I dont know whats going on, I will not be in South Florida again for another two weeks...Ill look into it then...

Agh!! I didn't know the gathering was next weekend! I definately want to go know. There's a lot of people I have been wanting to meet and some people I want to see again. Unfortunately, Northwest has Florida blacked out for most travel dates at this time. I'm going to have to see what I can do to get there.
Where is everyone staying? Close to MIA or FLL?
I should know if I can attend either today or tomorrow. It all depends what I can do with from FF miles from Northwest and/or some unused tickets on ATA...

I just emailed to Joe Fernandez and here he sent back to me
First of all, it was nice having you over here in Miami. We had a good
time! I know it will be nice when you come for Columbus! Sorry as I didn't send an e-mail before. By the way, that was a very nice internet report you did....very good and professional....everyone liked it.
FLL as of now is still closed...I spoke with Walt (like Bruce) and he
will let me know of
any new happenings. I explained to him that our show is this coming week
we are going to have many visitors. I cannot imagine everybody at the
holes at MIA....it will be too crowded!
Well, I will let you know and I hope things go well for them to reopen
Take care and keep up the good work!
Have anyone been to FLL take a good look whether is opened or not?

The West lot at FLL is still closed!
This is really sad, because we have had some great stuff here. Including DL 777, MD-11, the new DL connection ERJ-145. NW 742, DC-10-40. AC A320 60th. ACES A320. And the Embraer Legacy has been here for a few weeks.

Miami is truly a world class airport and in my opinion a thousand times better than FLL. I usually fly into FLL (cheaper) and head straight to MIA. After all, where will you find IB and AF narrowbodies on this side of the Atlantic? Also, where will you see a 727 that has flown all the way from Bolivia (LAB)? Miami remains, thanks to some photographers recently, a photo friendly airport.
