Are there good spotting and photography spots at Portland Int'l? That pic looks like it was taken from a parking garage. Would a 300mm lens be long enough? How is the variety of traffic? Have any of you had a good experience there?

looks like it was taken thru a window, so I am guessing one of the hotels close in.

It looks like from the Northside, or maybe the parking garage, thru a car window. None of the hotel around the airport have that angle back to the cargo area.

The short answer to your question is: yes. There is a lot of great places, and access is pretty good, and the Port police are not too bad as most of these spots are public areas off of main roads. Traffic though is pretty boring. The majority is narrow-body aircraft. Delta has a couple of 767s that go out, but other than that it is 737s, 757s, A320s, Dash-8s, MD-80s that kind of stuff. Freight is a little better as FedEx brings both DC-10s and A310s, sometimes MD-11s, UPS has 767s and A300s, occasionally the MD-11 or a DC-8. Air China has started ops with 747-200Fs, but their schedule is pretty prone to delays. Cargolux has 747-400Fs on WED and SAT nights and Korean has TUE, THU and SAT early departures (that pic above was because we had a 7 hour delay last week). It's kind of fun if you've never been out, but it gets a little repetitive after awhile.

I know most of the area around the airport pretty good so if you want some goods spots, email me and I'll let you know.

Looks like it's from the upper levels of the parking garage, looking south at the south runway. It's often used by the large planes because it's the longer of the two, and cargo areas are on the south side. Like the previous post indicated, the hotels don't have that kind of view.

Portland is great for Alaska Airlines, and Horizon Air including their newer Dash 8-400 and CRJ. Other than that, it's a varied number of daily flights of the other carriers, but not a huge variety. There's a weekly Air Transat A-310 on Wednesdays during the winter, a daily Hawaiiain DC-10, plus their new 763 a few days a week.

Quite some time ago, before I got into avaition photos in a psychotic way, I stayed at the Embassy SUites near the airport. My room faced south and had a very nice view of a/c on final for the south runway. Added advantage that the rooms windows actually opened!!! Hmmm, sounds like a reason for a trip north!

I'm flying FRA-PDX on 31st March with LH first commercial flight to Portland. So I have the same questions. Can anyone provide me with information or even would like to meet up with me?

Well since it seems like there's quite a few people either coming in on the inagural LH flight or traveling to see it, anyone interested in a A.net meet here in PDX on the 31st or 1st? Just a thought, it would be pretty cool to put faces to names, and now there is a bit of a justifiable reason.

Tobi, what do you want to know? Spotting places, traffic, general PDX info? You can mail me at: hoellishalo@hotmail.com and I'll do what I can to help you (and anyone else who wants to know) out.
