Hearing on the rumour mill that another fence has been erected at the end of 09R? Any truth in the rumour?

No surprise really, the T5 construction has been gradually encroaching towards 09R for a while now and the wooden posts that were put in the ground about a month ago in front of the current fence were a sign of things to come.

So does this fence run all the way round as far as the Esso Garage? Or can you still take pseudo -ramp shots when they line up?

Shaun, I think this is more to do with the construction of T5 than security issues. Check out the picture below:

That was a month ago and the markers in the ground are precursors to construction work of some kind. My hope is that what's happening is that the perimeter road is about to be moved in the same manner that it has been under the approach to 09L. Being even more positive you could say that this might actually be a good thing since there is the possibility that the perimeter road and fence are both about to get a bit closer to the action.

If I have time I'll go check it out tomorrow.

What are the chances of a new viewing gallery being built at T5?  Big grin

It's a possibility, and as T5 will incorporate a new control tower it will be interesting to see what happens to the old one.

I hope you are right, but I fear you are not. I was moved on by the Police from near the approach to 27R. I had a long chat with the copper concerned - he was polite, apologetic, but very firm. I asked about other areas that I could take photographs from, but each area I indicated he said were "restricted" areas. I must stress that these were all public places (and that I was behaving myself!). His "excuse" was the threat of war.

I don't want to scare anyone off - it won't stop me from taking photo's, and if I am asked to move on I will comply. But it isn't looking good...

Well, the spot by the approach to 27R is on HAL (Heathrow Airport Limited) property, so they can easily boot you off there. As for the Myrtle Avenue field, my understanding is that it's a public green space, so they cannot stop you from being there. It also has a footpath going across the middle of it, so if this is officially a public footpath then again, you have every right to be there.

As for 09R lineup shots, well they have certainly erected a new WOODEN fence between the main road and the perimeter road, so you can't walk through the gap to get on to the perimeter road to get to the perimeter fence anymore. I *think* this fence is just to screen off all the construction work from the main road, but to be honest, they are digging up so much of the area, I really don't know if it's still possible to walk to that spot anyway. These types of shots:

have already been impossible for some months because of a new fence beyond the perimeter fence to go between the construction work and the airfield proper. It's going to be a crying shame if we lose the side-on shots from that area too.

As for a new viewing deck on T5 - the plans for the terminal have NO PROVISION for such an area. In fact, the terminal looks as if it has HUGE expanses of glass, but it appears that unless you're travelling, you will have no access to any views from inside the terminal whatsoever.

Soooooo depressing. Heathrow just seems like a nightmare at the moment!

The spot under the approach for 09L is also okay as you are not on BAA property.

I can confirm that there will be no spectator facilities on T5.

Some months ago at a watch meeting we had a presentation from the chap in charge of T5, and I brought the subject up. Not surprisingly, he said a viewing area will never be built on T5.

The new Tower won't be located at the T5 site, but will be built at the end of one of the T3 piers (can't remember exactly at this moment). But it has caused some consternation from the ATCOs, as it means at least a 25 minute walk from the ops room to the car park........and if you've ever met one, you'll know ATCOs don't like to be delayed on their way home !  Smile

Regards

Garry

I have just got back from Heathrow and visited the area around 09R to see what was happening. A new perimeter fence is being constructed about 50 metres in front of the current one (where the red posts are in the picture), and as you start driving along the Eastern Perimeter Rd (that runs past 09L and 09R) there is a sign saying 'Perimeter Rd improvements Summer 2002-Summer 2004, from what I can see the road is effectively being pushed Eastwards by around 50 metres to create a larger working area for the contractors, when completed it will also be the way in and out T5 which is why it looks like it will become a dual carriageway. Similarly a new fence has sprung up just behind the current fence along the west end of 09L-the gap between the two fences is approximately the width of two lanes of traffic, and when T5 is open there will be a need for a dual carriageway perimeter road.

So the new fence has a wire mesh, emergency access gates and barbed wire at the top, so far as I am concerned it is a new perimeter fence and will be 50 metres nearer the action than before. Whether the wire mesh is camera friendly or not is a totally different matter-I fear not.

Does anyone have a link to any of the plans/drawings of T5?

The spot near the Esso garage is still ok, but I'd avoid it until things settle down security wise at LHR.
