Hi All,

It seems as though the only available SLR Digitals out there at the moment that are worth considering are the Nikon D1, Canon D30 and Fuji S1.

Just wondering, seeing as all of these are a tad pricey, has anyone heard of whether these manufacturers or anyone else are in the process of developing a cheaper mid range digital SLR? And when this would come to the consumer? When one of them does, they'll make a killing.

Thanks in advance

Andrew

I have no doubt that in a few years that mid-priced/range digital SLRs will be in the marketplace its almost inevitable. As for myself, I am looking to purchase a more rugged version of the Canon D-30 that Canon says that it has in the works.

Hi Mike,

Nikon 100D??? What's that? I'm guessing mid range digital SLR. Is it out yet or still under development?

Hi Andrew and all

I am not really clued up with the digital stuff at the moment but am I correct in saying the bigger the 'MegaPixel' the better the quality.

Or has it got to do with the lens?

bit of both I think Gary. But I think a lot of it has got to do with the price!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Andy,

It's a new Nikon Digital but I'm not exactly sure of the details. Since I'm not interested (yet) in getting a digital I haven't be reading the post (on the Nikon List) in full but I'll see if I can find info on it for you. I'm not even sure when (or if) it will be released.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for looking out for me. Much appreciated. As always, I don't want to make a big investment only to find that it has been superceded five days after purchase!

Watch for some big announcements in a few weeks at the PMA show in Orlando. I'm losing sleep in anticipation already...

Unfortunately, this is the way it goes with digital cameras (just like computers). If you always want to have the best, you'll likely never buy anything. Just pick a camera you like, buy it, and have fun. In six months (or a year), dump it on eBay, and start over...

I'm currently in that mode right now, and so far, it's working out well. I think...

The latest rumors:

The Nikon D1 replacement is using a 5mp CCD, and they are announcing a 2mp D30 competitor as well.

More info coming...

Here's some more info (rumors??):

"Saw a rumor that Nikon will announce the end of the N90s at PMA in
February, with a possible replacement. Also, that in addition to the
previously rumored F100-based Canon D30 killer, Nikon will perhaps announce
two other digital cameras surrounding the D1 in capability."

Looks like I"ll have to wait until Feb anyway, so I'll see what Nikon come up with.

However, if it is improved versions of the D1, then I would imagine that the price would not come down, so Fuji is still the only one for my budget.

Let's wait and see.

Andrew
