I thought all locations were closed for photography, yet a friend of mine said that the West side of the airport, next to a Garrett engine facility was still open. This is where I took this photograph and I hope they don't EVER close down this location.
Can anyone tell me how the situation is in FLL also?
I plan to be down there next week.
Finally, I saw a very funny little snippet in Airways Magazine this month about how we should all write the airport officials and volunteer to watch the airports for terrorists as we are taking photographs.
If you'd like, I can tell you exactly what the snippet said.

I took lots and lots of pics from that spot you describe - called Rankin Rd. I heard that since terror alert went red it is closed. What a shame. The spot at FLL is closed too. I hope these spots re-open once the terror alert goes down

Jay, In FLL go to the parking garage or the sidewalk between T1 and T2.If they go to the west then FLL is worth the trip.If they go to the east then its MIA.

Jay,
I am currently in Detroit, however I had a friend check out Rankin. According to his report this afternoon, the barricades are still up just beyond the entrance to Garrett.
So IAH is still locked down. When (or should I say, if) I get back home I'll have to check it out myself.

Thanks for the info Thomas!
I had heard another location was closed at IAH, but not
the Rankin Road location. What a shame. Any word on
how your petition is doing? Making "any" headway with
the airport officials?

Jay,
As far as the petition is concerned, well it has run out of steam. At last check it was at 383 signatures, we were hoping for at least 500. We may have to settle for 400 and hope for the best when it is presented to the powers that be.
Brian (Lear777) at the 'IAH Spotters Club' has arranged a photo shoot with the Chronicle along with a club member holding the petition at the old official obs area within the next week or so. Hopefully this may get a few more so far un-reached local enthusiasts to sign the petition as well as a little free press for our cause.
For those that have not signed as of yet, I ask that you take a look and help us out here. And to those that have signed, thank so very much.

Jay,
Well, I am out of town until late March and Brian is back at school (Embry Riddle). So, Joe Roach, is suppose to be making contact with the Chronicle to set up a date. If you like I'll have Joe Roach e-mail you with the details. E-mail me and let me know if you want me to shoot Joe an e-mail with your contact e-mail address.

Roley,
I was referring to the areas where CO777 recommended for spotting...your area was so far off the beaten path and too close to the closed off 9L area...I could see why the cops would kick you out of there...

The National Terror Alert has been lowered from "high" to "elevated" where it has been since 9/11 except for periodic spikes. Now.......we need to try and get these viewing areas opened again.

Hi Everybody, I will be in FLL on the 15th of March.I would hope the spotting area at by 9L will be open. Of course it depends on the wind direction. Anybody else going to be in FLL on the weekend of the 15th?

Great to hear that the security alert is now down to Yellow. Lets all hope they reopen all the viewing area and do not find some excuse to keep them closed.
Here at LHR they have still not reopened the viewing gallery. They say that they wish for additional guards to patrol the area before they reopen it. Guess what , security/police say they have no additional capacity to cover this. Therefore the area remains closed !!!!
I hope you have better luck than us , as im due to do a bit of spotting at FLL and MCO in 6 weeks time.

Hmm...the way it looks now I may be able to go the morning of the 16th to shoot but I cant say for sure yet...it also depends on the runway usage, if 9L is in use and the viewing area is closed there is no point for me as Im not a huge fan of shooting departures...oh well...play it by ear I guess...
