I was thinking about going to MDW saturday. I wanted to get Mexicana and some other airlines there(not the usuals) and I thought any of the people in the chi-town area would want to join me, mabye we can have a spotters meetup. I know that it's on such short(just a week) notice but it's been nice out and Mexicana will start a CUN-MDW service on weekends starting this saturday with 757's and I thought it would be a good opportunity to get a photo opportunity to go down there.

I dont know - seeing as how we are going to be at war on Saturday and under a very anal state of Alert it might not be the best idea...........

Mabye but i'll try going out there anyway. They are having the inagural flight of the new year round CUN-MDW service and they may have a special 757 come in and also they have the A320 from Gjudalajara. I know other people that went down there on high alert and nothing happened to them.

Well seeing as how ORD is on lockdown right now (there's even a cop sitting at the 27L spot), I would doubt you'll be able to get any good spotting in at MDW. People have been able to spot here during high alert before but now with the war going on, perimeter security is only going to get tighter.

Well I decided not to go. I've been like this for a while and so mabye when this goes down we can do it. I hope this doesn't affect with Chris Kilroy comming here with some other a.net people in april. I want to be with them again but we will see how this war thing goes with us spotting.

I agree about thinking twice about spotting for the next few weeks - I'm in the Chicago area this weekend, and I was hoping to do some 27L photography.

CactusA319:

Are the police moving people away from 27L? If all they are doing is just keeping an eye out, I may go out there for a few hours. I've had decent luck with the police at that spot (knock on wood). Last time I was there, a cop drove right past me as I was taking a pic of an incoming 744 (with a big lens), and he didn't even stop.

I dunno about the gathering in April. I may postpone it for a bit til things get better.

Scooter:

In the past Schiller Park police have driven by or sat at that spot keeping an eye on things but leaving you alone. Chicago police on the other hand will more often than not kick you out (I've had it happen a couple of times, both times CPD was involved). The cops patrolling that spot now are CPD so I have no doubt they'll run you out of there in a heartbeat. I haven't tried it out for myself since the war started since I've been really busy, but I don't think they'd let you stay there.

Guys, I was at ORD (27L) all day on Sunday (March 23) without any problems. There were even a few other spotters there as well. The only time I was afraid that I'd be kicked out was when a black detectives car circled the lot a couple times - he drove past me, but didn't stop.

There was even one guy who was completely out of his car all afternoon (parked in the restricted area of the USG lot) just watching planes go by - the cops didn't even talk to him.

I was fully expecting to get chased away that day, but it was cool. Maybe because it was Sunday (less traffic)?

That's good to hear dude. Maybe it's luck of the draw since some of us have been hassled by those same cops even before the war broke out. Who knows? I figured since they blocked off the 22R spot on Higgins Rd. and were constantly patrolling the perimeter and the 27L spot, they would be kicking out anyone attempting to stop and watch planes. I'll try it out in a couple of weeks (I'll be out of town this weekend) and see how it goes.

When did they close down the 22R spot? Not like I ever took photos there, but it was a nice alternative if I needed it. I did see the concrete barriers when I was there last weekend.

I think the 27L spot is safe - with the USG building there, they can't close the road. And what can they do about the parking lot? Not a thing. Unless they gate it off, which doesn't seem too far-fetched in these times.

22L was closed a few weeks ago, I want to say sometime in Feb. but I'm not sure. I just happened to drive down Higgins one day and see the barriers up. Like you said the 27L spot is an office parking lot so I doubt they'll close that off.
