Wietse,

thanks for the reply - is this a permanent closure or just while building work is going on?

Also what is the best way to get to the spots your mentioned - as we will have to use public transport or are they within walking distance of the terminal

Well, at first they said it was due to the war, but now the reason is believed to be the construction indeed..

For routes towards the other spots I suggest you have a look at http://www.schipholview.nl/

A good spot within walking distance would be the bridge over the A-4 (and airport roads).
Walk towards and past the parking garage P2 from the terminal (left when you exit the terminal through the arrivals hall) towards the "cargo route".
Past the gas station and continue on until you see the bridge.
If the 36C is in use for departures (or 18C arrivals, but then not everyone will take it) aircraft will taxi past there. Never shot from there (usually drive to the 06-24 or 36R, but that might be too far for you to walk and there are no busses), but it looks like a good spot.

If the 09-27 is in use during the morning or early afternoon, the McD is also a good spot. Take the shuttlebus (free) to P3 (longterm parking) and walk a short distance towards the golden arches  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

In my memory McD is only good in the late afternoon (evening in summertime) During the morning hours and early afternoon the sun is behind the airplane. So thats no good..

In the afternoon the sun to the west or northwest, so you're looking directly into it when at the McD  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I only shot from the MacD spot once, and that was when the Beluga visited for the first time. The light is just horrible from that spot even in summer. So unless you enjoy Big Macs avoid that spot!
