Hi guys,

I'm planning a trip to AMS within the next 2 weeks. The only problem is that I haven't got a car so I will rent a bike somewhere. Is it actually possible to go around the airport by bike? Does anybody has a good roadmap?

Actually I know most of the spotting facilities at AMS but did new spots emerge at the new RWY/ are old spots still reachable at the parallel RWY?

Thanks in advance,

Thomas

New rwy:

Not yet in daytime service.

18-36C Old spots barely reachable, but going on bike opens up new places where you cant go by car.

I just dont know where you can rent the bike. If you found a spot, please let me know!

I've been looking for a bike-rental for ages at or around Schiphol, I do not think there is one nearby. If you find one, please do inform us (me).

How about taking the train to a nearby station where there maybe a rental shop and then cycle back to Schipol. You can rent in Amsterdam Centre, then maybe bring the bike back by train to a station nearer Schipol!

Taking the bike by train is certainly feasible but mind the following:
1) it's not allowed during morning and evening rushhour
2) get a ticket for the bike (available from ticket counters only, not from the machines). Ticket costs about €5

Renting the bike won't be the problem as I can most probably get it from a nice lady where I will stay for the days.

What would interest me more is a detailed map so I can spend more time photographing than looking for the right way  Big grin

Maybe I'm coming to AMS from this Tuesday to Thursday or Friday! Weather looks good in this period of time!

Here are some maps:

On this old one the green dashes are cycle routes, but there are a few changes in the top left where there has been construction.

This map is newer and shows the new runway/roads and new runway numbers:

Here is info on the numbered areas marked on the above map:

Good road maps can be found on ViaMichelin: http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/dyn/controller/HomePage.
Under Maps fill in: schiphol - netherlands. The result gives three locations. Click on one of them. By sliding you can zoom in on the map several times to get considerable detail.

Wishing you good AMS biking and spotting!
