A lot depends on the webpage. I would probably hesitate to contribute photographs to a webpage under construction since I can't actually look at beforehand.

I've had this request this week from someone named Kimo de Gelder. Part of the e-mail read "I am looking for aircraft photos for our homepage. Ive heard that people on airliners complain about the fact that there photos were rejected. Can you help us with some aircraft pictures that are rejected at airliners to put on our page???"

I thought that sounded a bit silly and like a general form letter and didn't bother responding. It sounds like he's just trying to get any photos he can. On the other hand, for example, I have been asked many times by Vincent Gury to use specific photographs on his unofficial Air France webpage. The way he went about asking for permission, his concern for pointing out to people viewing his webpage that all photographs there are copywritten material, and the website itself impressed me and I wouldn't hesitate to give him permission to use more of my photos. I've also allowed my photos to be used on a page devoted to Corsair. I don't bother replying to something like a form letter that doesn't refer to specific photographs. If it refers to a specific photo I always ask to see the website first before deciding.

Cheers,
Felix

Felix,
I got the same one from Kimo de Gelder 2 days ago aswell. Same message, didn't even bother going to the the site to investigate. Just deleted it. I think Ben, you got the same one. The wording sounds familiar. If I ever get a photo request, it must be from an official website or else a publication. Thats just my opinion but I want the spondoolics !!!!! (money)  Smile

I wouldn't go so far as to insist that it's an official website. I've also been asked for certain photographs to be used on two websites (both unofficial) devoted to Montreal airports and again didn't hesitate because they are both run by enthusiasts and they are sites that I visit almost every day. If you like the site and the people running it politely ask for your permission and don't stand to make any money from having the photographs then what would be the reason to refuse? You are only giving them the rights to show the photograph but you don't lose your copyright. The photographs are no more or less vulnerable to unauthorized use than they are on Airliners.net but they are getting greater exposure and they are helping make a useful (if unofficial) website a little better. It's obviously different if it's for commercial purposes and then it's only fair if they offer you something in return. If making money was my only motivation then perhaps I would restrict myself to publications or official sites and not give freebies to anyone but there's a lot of satisfaction to having an individual ask to use a photo for non-profit use in a way that agrees with you. Unfortunately that feeling doesn't last long when you refuse. Money isn't everything.

True money isn't evrything but to an unemployed 15 year old a little something is always welcome  Smile Don't get me wrong I'm not in it for the money its just that I wouldn't mind the odd little contribution !

I probably won't let him use it. It just sounds like a "kid" (ok, im 19, so im young too) just wanting to make a plane website.

I've had no problem contributing to websites that
are already up and running. A credit is usually against the photograph is enough for me.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I'm more worried about Martin:
"...an unemployed 15 year old ..." ?
I hesitate to ask: What is the legal age of employment where you are?

Take care Martin... See your dad for a raise in pocket money!

Cheers

Well I guess I'm different then all of you. I would let him use my photos as long as he follows some guide lines. Like putting my email address below the photo, and saying that its taken by me.
Sure I'd like some $$$, but its just a private personnal website, I'd let them. As long as they ask first. I'd let them.

I have no problems to give my pictures for private websites of enthusiasts as long as they credit me! I do the same on my website dedicated to the A320 series at a320.exit.de!

The main thing is that you have to ask the photographer before using the pic on your page!

Torben
