I am curious to find where the best spotting locations at CWL are located. I passed in last week and noticed that the viewing area in the terminal is closed "temporarily". I would imagine that there are some popular viewing areas on the perimeter though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TrintoCan.

I know for definite there are some decent spots around. I'm sure Shaun got some shots by the Threshold? Also I think you can get round by the maintenence hangars for some shots there, and of course on the main road under the approach path.

The only thing you have to worry about is finding traffic, there are quite a few 'lean patches' through the day where there aren't many flights in and out, you just have to choose when to go carefully!

Hello TrintoCan .... the best spots at the moment is up the tree on the roundabout and up at the 30 approach ....
As long as you have a car you'll be alright because the walk to runway 30 approach is quite long, around 20-25mins from the terminal,

The above photo's are taken at the runway 30 approach, there is a little layby there so you can park your car without any hastle from the police.
The roundabout tree is one of my favourites at the moment, just 5 mins walk from the terminal .....

If your going for photography this spot isn't the best because the sun is infront of you.
There is also another spot i was told about right on the otherside of the airport with the sun behind you, but i havn't looked into it yet but will do next time im down.
If you need any more info drop me an e-mail and i'd be more than happy to help  Smile
Regards
Shaun

Thanks a lot guys. Shaun, is the roundabout you are referring to that one right by the fence where the Porthkerry Road runs on to loop around 30 and head to Rhoose? I have seen several people park there and view planes (although I would guess that there is not a designated parking area).

Have a good time Shaun... Tallpines Golf Lodge is a nice place, if i'm right you were on the road that leads up to the taxiway and then round the back of the runway to the spotting place.. nice!

Greetings from Ca´n Pastilla .... it´s raining here so i´ve popped into an internet cafe to dry off ... im right by the approach and there´s lots of wingleted 738´s coming in but due to the torrential rain im being hed back ...
Dan, that´s right ... i took a walk about 8am this morning up the lane to the runway, the planes taxi reasonably close ...
Hoping for some Sun tomorrow, they say it´s gonna be a clear day ... i hope so ñ)

How long are you staying there?

Thats right, I think to get a full frame side on shot of a 737 you need a 24mm lens. Although at this time of the year I don't think the sun fully gets round to that side, but it might..

Torrential rain is good for photography, get some spray shots!
