As a fast-moving subject, I would like to change my shutter speed from 1/50 to 1/250 so I followed the operating instructions but it does not help me at all.
All I have to do is to following the instructions:
1). Set the mode dial to S.
2). Select a shutter speed with the jog dial.
But the information didn't say anything about change the shutter speed. The book said, "The shutter speed can be selected from 1/1000 to 30 seconds." My question is how do I change the shutter speed from my Sony F717? Please help!!!!
Thanks a lot!

As you already mentioned you have to put the camera on the S mode.
When you have done that there are 4 icons on your right (I am assuming you have disabled all display information like battery power remaining, storage capacity remaining, recording folder etc).
To change the shutter time you have to select the bottom one (a number, typically 50 or 60). Do this by the jog dial. Put the yellow cursor in front of the number. Press the jog dial. Now the number turns yellow, and the cursor turns white. By turning the jog-dial left and right you change the shutter time.
Turn it clockwise (as seen from behind the camera) to make the shutter time smaller. Counter-clockwise to make the shutter time longer. You may get NR in front of the number. I believe this means that you are counting in seconds. NR30 therefore means your shutter time is 30 seconds. I am not quite sure about that though, I only just got the camera myself! I am still learning too!

Hi John .... after selecting the "S" mode you will see on the LCD screen a list of settings down the right hand side, i.e ... "+0.3EV", F2.0 and 640 (these are my settings so they will probably differ from yours) now, just infront of the toggle where you choose the "S" mode you should see a black sliding button which you can move left and right, move that until you are on the bottom setting on the LCD screen, i.e mines on 640 yours will probably be on 300. When your on it, then press that black button inwards and it should highlight the number, then move the black slider right to go up and left to go down ... when finished press the black slider back in and it is set ....
Hopefully this will help you ...
