Usually when submiting photos I have a pretty good idea which ones will generate a lot of hits and which ones will be ignored. Sometimes, however, there's a photo that doesn't seem particularly special yet generates a lot more hits than you'd ever expect. Have you had photos which ended up being much more popular than you thought the photo deserved? Here's my best example. I still can't figure out what's so special about this one? The quality isn't that great, it was shot more or less towards the sun, and the subject is nothing out of the ordinary yet it received over 500 hits. My best guess is somebody linked to it on a webpage.

Felix,
I know exactly what you mean! This is one of my shots that is generating lots of hits. It's not my best quality either - 400ISO (that's all I had that day)

It's strange what people find more interesting and which photos generate more "hits". For example, I didn't think these shots would generate as many views as they did since they are far from be good shots. The first one is a long long zoom shot cropped, backlit and not sharp. I uploaded it only because it was a very interesting angle and one rarely seen from photos at JFK. It has about 995 views in the last few days. The second shot, a airport overview (terminal) shot, has about 768 views in the past 24 hours or so.

Yeah, there really is no rhryme or reason why a medicore quality photo will generate so many hits. What I have observed is this, when a new or special liveried (especially when applied to a widebody .i.e. SQ's Tropical or AZ's Baci) aircraft hits the scene, people want to see it, the same goes for a new aircraft type joining an airline's fleet, regardless of how so-so the photography may be.
Lets face it a photo of a CO/DL/UA 737 is only going to generate so many hits, unless it is shot in a unique manner or has been repainted, or even tragically going down in flames. Frankly I am still puzzeled why my dusk shot of a CO 777 landing has generated so much interest, yet a better (composition and lighting wise) shot just below it featuring a sunset shot CO 737-700, also
landing later that day has generated a smaller number of hits... IMHO this is the superior photo....my guess would be that it is a smaller, less interesting aircraft, thus the small number of hits.

There is some truth behind that, this one I did not even want to upload in the beginning due to the sun reflection, but I did and guess what where it ended up:
Ok, this photo is at 990 hits. That's the most for any actual plane (not inside etc) of mine. True it's a 777, and it's just beginning to rotate, but I could have zoomed in so much more, and the weather was cloudy and rainy. I had a friend get the same pic almost, but he zoomed in more, his photo only has 494 hits.

This pic is ranked 14 (out of 890) in terms of popularity, and I have no clue why. It was one of my very first days of aviation photography, the angle was bad, you can't even see the landing gear, and the scan is of poor quality.

One feature influencing this trend is definitely the new option to view the most popular photos of the last 7 days /24 hrs etc. That way, the better uploads get selected by those regularly looking at all pics, and the casual user just looks at the best new shots, keeping them at the top of the list for weeks. It really influences the number of views.
Another important influence is that some pictures get mentioned in dedicated "Look at this" topics, like the UA B744, and hence generate interest.
Oh, and CFalk: My guess would be your picture is so popular exactly because the landing gear is not visible - the thumbnail looks as if the plane was sitting on the grass or had gone off runway....

Without detracting from your picture (it's a very good portrait shot, good angle and lighting, no quality problems or anything) over 7000 hits is a hell of a lot!
Here are two pics of the same plane uploaded roughly at the same time (one of them is yours).
Both of these pics are also quite good, but have registered hits only in the low-mid 100 range.
I've noticed that those pics which are left at the very top of the first page, when you look at the latest additions, tend to get an awful lot of hits. Did it get left there for a week when Johan went on vacation?
Maybe someone linked your pic somehere and you got a lot of hits that way.

It certainly can make a difference how a shot gets added. If only a few shots get added at a time you can definately expect to get more views than if 700 photos are added in one shot and yours are down around 600 to 700. Not many people are going to go through 650 photos to view the 651st which was added. It is definately a matter of luck where your photo gets added. Once you do start to get some hits then the Most Popular Photos of the past 24-48 Hours can kick in.
I've noticed in my case that anything with British Airways, Air France, KLM, and American Airlines gets a lot of attention. For some reason Northwest, Continental, and US Air don't.

Hi,
Hey Gary, if only I could get my shot (below) on airliners.net It is taken from the exact spot your UA 744 one was. Not as good I admit but still (in my opinon a nice shot) Ah well, thats life!

Yeah, whats it all about......this is my most popular, you try your hardest getting your aircraft pics accepted then upload this as an afterthought.......
......an airport overview. This has over 1000 hits now and it's beyond me why!!
As has already been said 'variety is the spice of life'.
Now I've got to try to get a pic of an aircraft to No1 in my list, it'll take some time but I'll get there eventually!
There have been 1123 views since the photo has been added on Jannuary the 25th. The weather conditions have been very bad, the view of the aircraft is not free of poles and so on. Quite not a very inpressive image in my opinion but the public is thinking in an other way. Good for me.
And the second one is
which has been viewed 439 times since it was added on February the 15th. The picture is much darker than the above and as you can see in my comment i made to the picture I didn't even think it would be accepted, but it did and I won't complain about it.
But the very biggest surprise for me is
29 Chris28_17: Mikey---- i REALLY like that UA dc-10!!! i think i can understand why you would not think much of it, but its actually quite eerie and very cool... an
