REQ Info On Photography At PHL & PIT

After 25 years of regular (yearly and sometimes twice and thrice yearly) great and memorable visits to the USA, I haven't been back since 911 simply because I've been put off by the many stories of paranoid and ridiculous extremes of security officials and do-gooders around airports. However, I may be going on a non-aviation related trip to PHL and PIT in September and I thought of taking my camera along in case I have a few hours to spare. I checked the archives but found nothing recent or really useful. If there are any PIT & PHL locals out there, I'd sure appreciate any info you can provide me - including the paranoia level of the security people at this locations. How I miss the good old days!

I might be going to PHL pretty soon, so I'll let you know if I can shot or arrested. USAFHummer and Wagz and some other people from these forums went a few months ago and I read about it on here that Joe Wagner Sr. actually was arrested, or detained, whatever it technically was. But Island Avenue at PHL is a nice place to spot.

Being a PHL resident and spotter, I can safely say that photography at PHL is a coin toss. Sometimes the police could care less about spotters, sometimes they do. If they have a problem, they'll usually tell you to leave, without any hassles (unless of course you argue with them as my father an I found out in March). If you're going to be in a car, I'd say stay in your car until aircraft arrive, then hop out for the photo, and get back in again.

If you'll only be spotting from inside the airport, I can't help you with that. I don't think they have any problems with photography from the terminals, but I haven't been in there since pre-9/11.

I think Big Foot is blurry, Its not the photographers fault. Theres a large out of focus monster roaming the countryside

Thank you Nick and Joe for the info. I won't be there until mid September, so if anything new comes up in the meantime I'd sure appreciate your help. Is Island Avenue hassle free or do the cops chase you away from there too (depending on their mood of the day, I guess)?

Hog Island Road (which intersects with island Ave., I think...) is the best spotting location. You can sit about 300 feet under aircraft for 27R. Your assumption about the cops is pretty accurate. Sometimes they could care less, sometimes they chase you away. I think it depends on the individual officer too. There is absolutely no semblance of order in that department. In March, one cop told us its okay to spot on Hog Island Road, while another said we couldn't. Go figure.
