I posted a thread in civil aviation about the newest terror warning of a possible hijack toward late summer, but this part is more relevant here. You can now expect people with cameras to come under more scrutiny because of this quote from the warning:
"the hijackers may attempt to use common items carried by travelers, such as cameras, modified as weapons."
Well you know, if you hollow out that big long lens..............
Seriously, if any such thing should happen I think the noose will be pulled tight on us and our hobby.

Yeah Andy they could use that as a weapon but they could make a pen into a gun if they could, or knife. They did that once before a couple of years ago, but you don't see a ban on ball point or any type of pen. They can turn anything that looks what it is into a weapon. Even if that menas it's a camera lens or body.

Actually it wasnt "hollowing out" a shoe but attaching an explosive device to it. and thanks to him, most people have to remove their shoes before going thru security here in the USA.
Just attaching an explosive to something isnt the al-qeda trademark. All that will do is down one plane. their method is to take control of a plane and use it to take out more people on the ground/in buildings. That richard Reid guy wasn't a true al-queda he was like a "freelancer".

Actually I've been surprised for a long time that noone has come up with a gun disguised as a camera with a long lens...
It's a natural shape and you might even be able to have it double as a real camera (especially with the big DSLRs and fat lensbodies these days).
The shoe did have an explosive inserted in the heel or sole.
There have also been shoes with switchblades in the nose.
There have been mobile phones with bombs in them (still working as a phone...) and with guns as well (those are becoming a real problem in Europe).
