I feel so depressed that I couldn't get her last time in South Africa, well one day hopefully.

I found props also great to photograph and collect, how come hits are always lower I wonder?  Big grin

Sam, that Carvair is almost enough reason on its own for me to go back to South Africa... I've seen it and photographed it before, but not since its been tidied up and flown by Pheobus Apollo - if I could GUARANTEE seeing and being able to get some good photographs of it, I would probably go.

Props never get that many hits, even if they're interesting or rare ones. However, I've found that they generate quite a bit of e-mail. I can only presume that the few people who are passionate about big-props care about them alot. As for the rest who don't bother about big-props... HEATHENS! Big grin

Yeah props don't get many hits, I noticed that when uploading some of my dad's old shots. I guess the average age of the Ainet viewer doesn't allow for them to have seen many props operating commercially, hence the lower interest......

I don't think I have ever seen a Carvair, but I still love it Smile

Having said that of course, I chech the number of hits on all pictures of this Carvair, and two of the three have over 700 hits, the third picture has over 3000 hits. Maybe its novelty value - not many folks have seen a Carvair!

Here's an interesting side question for anyone interested: Which well-know current airline head-man played a significant role in the development of the Carvair?

Indeed, it was Sir Freddie Laker. It's rumored that Sir Freddie conceived the project in the bathtub as a replacement for Air Charter's Bristol Freighters in about the 1959 time-frame. Neat photo. I have an aversion to smiley faces on airplanes, but, neat photo...Jack

OK, we've settled on Sir Freddie Laker as being one of the main drivers behind the Carvair project, through his managing Aviation Traders Engineering Ltd (ATEL) at the time the Carvair was conceived - maybe even in the bath, as Cptkrell suggests. ATEL did all of the conversions from standard DC-4s to Carvairs at Southend in the UK.

You know the "saddest" part of my research was to look for the registration of it using my "Civil Registers of Great Britain 1919-1985", and not looking beyond aircraft registered G-APxx as I thought knew the vintage registers were in-sequence. Of course, this aircraft just had to be slap bang in the middle of a batch of aircraft registered in 1965.

One shot of these birds gives more interest than a bunch of A330's or B777 to A.net database!!!
