Upcoming NW Trip, What To Expect?

Im doing a weekend trip up to Hot Springs Arkansas in November, I decided to take NWA this time because ive only flown them once and it was a redeye A320 that I slept through the whole time, Ive never been to MEM, and I wanted to get a ride on the DC-9 while i still have a chance. I have some questions about NWA. Heres my itinerary....

Date: Friday, November 17 Flight: NW 292

Departs: New Orleans-Louis Armstrong Int'l, LA (MSY) at 11:25AM

Arrives: Memphis-Int'l, TN (MEM) at 12:42PM

Class of Service: Economy Class (T) Seat: 18-A

Flight Duration: 1 hour 17 minutes Miles: 349

Date: Friday, November 17 Flight: NW 1423

Departs: Memphis-Int'l, TN (MEM) at 2:42PM

Ive heard about and seen pictures of the new DC-9 interiors, are they really comparable to the 717 interiors?

Does NWA offer upgrades for purchase like US, FL, and AA? If so how much are they.

Lastly, what seat on the DC-9-30 is the best to be able to see the engine and the flaps at the same time, like this picture:

If you want the legroom on the DC9 then go for the first row of economy (row 5) but if you want to see the engine and the contrails then I'd go for about row 22 or 21, try both rows on your first flights then change your seats accordingly for the return. It does get rather loud back there, but since your flights are all relatively short, that might not matter as much.

My family had a problem with NWA and will not fly with them again, here is the story (I hope that this doesn't happen to you, but I thought since you asked about upgrading):

we were told that it was .01 cents per mile flown to upgrade at the time of check in, as long as you had a full fare ticket, which we did. So I went to check us in online and it said that it would be $200 per person one way, we were flying ANC-MSP. so I called up customer service and was passed around to different people and finally a lady talked to a supervisor and I was told that the only way you could do this type of upgrade was if you were on a connecting flight.

I asked if I was flying through SEA that I would be able to upgrade, and she said yes. I asked if there were any seats on the connecting flight through Seattle. As soon as I asked that she said no, I don't think she would have been able to check that fast. so then I asked where she had gotten her info and she said that it was off of a web page, which I asked to see and was promptly told that it was for staff only.

Well I told her that it should be made public and got off the phone, I then e-mailed NWA to see what their response was to this. They told me that there was no such thing as a .01 cents per mile flown upgrade... even if you did connect. I wasn't so mad that I wouldn't be able to fly first class, but the fact that I had been lied to.

So that all being said I'm not sure if it would be $200 for your flights, what I would do is try to check in early on-line and if there is anything available it will ask you if you want it and it will tell you how much it is. if it doesn't give you a prompt asking you if you want to upgrade then I'd ask them at the airport, as maybe just one of the segments are available.

I do truly hope that you have a wonderful flight on NWA, as I know that I use to have great flights with them!  Smile (unfortunately the golden age of flying is over)

Service: On all of your flights they'll have a full beverage service (well, I have to admit I'm assuming so on the flights less than an hour - it's possible that those may have limited beverage service. But my guess is a full beverage service). No flights will have any IFE.

Interiors: The DC-9 interior bins are like the 717 bins, with the large size and the railing. The seats don't look very comfortable if you look at the picture on A.net of a Northwest DC-9 interior (the photo that was taken in Long Beach earlier this year). On the A319, the interior is much brighter and the seats look cleaner, although my dad has told me that they are not comfortable. I've only ever been on NW's 757s so I can't personally vouch for those other aircraft except for what I've seen in pictures, but this should be pretty close.

Well since NW doesn't fly ANC-SEA then yeah, wouldn't be that hard.

Happens a lot in a secure connection since most of that just like every other company has is a resource page that if somone logged onto they could potentually change it and such.

I have not seen NW offer any upgrades or hear of such since back before 9/11. NW used to offere paid upgrades, but I have not seen that in the longest time. But just because of that not to fly NW is pretty pethetic.

NW was still selling upgrades as of early 2005. I'm elite now, so I haven't had the chance to see if they are lately, but they definitely were after 9/11. IIRC it was something like $45 for MEM-ORD. Flights through MEM are generally your best shot for empty F seats, other things being equal.

Burnsie, I mentioned that it was available for $200 per person oneway. There were other things that went into the reason for us not wanting to fly with them again, but I didn't feel like sharing my life story  Wink

During your layover in MEM, it's very important you eat some good BBQ. Your layover's long enough-pig out!

As for a seat on the DC-9-30, unless you don't like views, DON'T GET ROW 21. 20's somewhat blocked by the engine, so probably 18 would be good. Row 26 on the -50 is blocked as well, so keep that in mind. The sounds from the engines are awesome, so back is good Big grin

ON DC-9s, you want to sit about 3 rows from the rear. Bring ear plugs. NWA spent a lot on upgrading the interiors several years ago and they keep them up. The overhead bins are larger on the right side than over the left. Keep this in mind if you carry a 22 in rollaboard on. Service, nothing special. You may not buy upgrades to first class. These all go to Platinum/Gold elites anyway. You can buy access to the premium coach seats but that will put you back in the front of the coach cabin where you will not get the view you want.
