Best Airline USA-costa Rica Biz Class?

Posted (7 years 5 months 1 day 18 hours ago) and read 5149 times:

G-day,
In march my family is planning a trip to SJO for a couple weeks, we are going to use some miles and buy mileage on AS and fly business class with on of AS's partners. LAN chile, Continental, Delta, and AA all are partners that fly down there.

Lan chile and continental are to expensive compared with AA and Delta, I haven't had good experiences with either AA or Delta and have tried to stay away from them for a while, but as long as they get us to our destination and its not to much trouble then that works for a semi-short flight.

I have gotten some good information from some people here on A.net about frequencies and what not, but I was wondering what you thought would be the best airline for comfort?

my route ands aircraft choices are these:
[bold]AA:[/bold]
ANC-LAX on AS -B737
LAX-SJO on AA -B757
---
ANC-DFW AA -B757
DFW-SJO AA-B757
---
ANC-DFW AS -B737 (not that great of a connection)
DFW-SJOAA -B757
---
ANC-MIA AA-B757/B737
MIA-SJO AA-AB6 (A300) (which is a double isle aircraft!!!)
---
ANC-MIA AS-B737 (we would have the day in MIA)
MIA-SJO AA-AB6

on the way back its pretty much the same options. except that going through MIA there is a good connection with AS!

[bold]Delta:[/bold]
I'll just put the delta flights up, so starting in SEA.

SEA-Atlanta Delta -B767-300
Atlanta-SJO Delta -B757
---
SEA-Atlanta Delta-B757
Atlanta-SJO Delta-B767-300

the flight from SEA-Atlanta is 40 minutes longer then the flight Atlanta-SJO.
Any info would be appreciated a whole heap!

Sorry if this has been brought up before, I didn't see anything.
~Cheers-

CO223 ANC-IAH and CO1499 IAH-SJO. . . . .  biggrin

Thanks Pep!
Im trying to weight if its worth buying the extra miles to fly on CO. We just got back from an unexpected trip to New Zealand (grandfather died) in which we bought tickets from ANC-AKL and back on flights that left with in 5-12 hours of buying the tickets. so that was pretty spendy for the four of us all at once, plus we have other trips planned through out the year.
it would be an extra $500 dollars per person or so to fly on Continental, so it would have to be worth it  Wink. I think in the end we might end up flying AA or DL (not our favourites)

So if anyone has any info on what airline out of the two would be better or what type of aircraft would be best to take that would be greatly appreciated.

Given ONLY the options you show above, this is my pick:

Quoting Alaskaqantas (Thread starter):
ANC-LAX on AS -B737
LAX-SJO on AA -B757
---
ANC-DFW AA -B757
DFW-SJO AA-B757

I prefer the second one - ANC-DFW on AA and then on to SJO on AA.

Thanks,
I wish that i could fly CO, like i've said im not a big fan of AA or DL, but its just that the money isn't worth it for flights that aren't even really over 5 hours.

I found an excellent fare for AA from ANC-DFW-ANC in June last night. . . . I would have preferred UA or CO . . . .but picked AA for the fare $1301.06 (In F). UA wanted $2009.00 and CO wanted just under $1900.

Interestingly, I flew UA ANC-Denver-BHM about a year ago and paid just under $1400. An increase in the discounted F fare of $600 in less than a year!  Wow! But as you said, don't see the value for the $$$ in paying $2000 for a flights that last 5.5 hrs (ANC-Denver) and 3.0 hrs (Denver-BHM) respectively.

So, go with AA . . . they seem to be having some decent prices out of ANC these days. I played around on AA.com and Orbitz last night for a while, and AA's ANC fares - at least at the moment - are hands down beating everyone else . . . . even the magic "LCC" US Airways. They wanted $1800 for ANC-PHX-CLT-BHM . . . . and after the fiasco I had with them three weeks ago, it'll be a warm day in Anchorage again before I'm getting on US or HP metal anytime soon.

Please note: I spelled out Denver because upon checking before posting something is damned sure heywire with A-Net again . . . D E N came back as "CURRRENT-DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT/KDEN" or some such nonsense.

Geez Johan has some work to so . . .

I hope the 757 seats are comfortable . . . I'm booked on one ANC-DFW and return. Here's the one and only photo in the A-Net database of an AA 757 F cabin. Looks comfy enough. . . . looks like a standard issue domestic F leather seat to me. No adjustable headrest on those, like UA. Looks like old style F seats. Definitely "nothing special in the air".    It is F though, not cattle class.

I feel you'll get better service if you do an interline connection and take AS to LAX then UA from LA to SJO, or just take SJO the whole way from SEA to SJO.

Personally, I avoid AA at all costs do to the marginal & inconsistant service. I'd take DL over AA anyday.

Hope you'll let us know what you'll decide on.

IIRC, UA is no longer flying LAX-SJO; the other option for that route would be TA. I've heard they have better service than AA...  sly

Seems like the 757 seats are no better than the AA version. Lose, Lose I guess.

And last I saw a photo of DLs meal service here: www.airlinemeals.net (See Delta Section, Domestic F photo, photos #250/251) it appeared bizarre to me to serve F pax on a paper covered plastic tray . . .

I'd go AA . . . but it's your $$$.

If they were flying a 767 with the 2-1-2 seating in BizFirst down there I would agree with you but since CO flies a 738 and DL flies a 757 I would call it a wash.

Don't even get me started on that topic! Just got back from Manchester and they had plastic forks and knives. How much more does it cost to wash those when you already have to wash the glasses and plates? That said, the food is airplane food whether on CO or DL and is bearable but nothing extraordinary.

The flights to SJO are in the 757 so they do have the newer seat covers in light blue. No headrests though wide enough to roam around in. Unfrtunately they are on the 6 row First class planes so no Song IFE on them.

would there possibly be ex-song 757(IFE) planes flying the SEA-Atlanta run?
I think that we are leaning towards Delta still, just now we need to decided whether thats exactly what we want, and if so then what aircrafts we want to travel. (on the 757 the ex-song ones, are they 7 rows?)

Anything special on the 767-300 or the 757 on Delta (also we can take the 767-400 LAX-Atlanta, are they any good?)
Thanks for all the help so far, expect a detailed report with pictures!

For December they are showing 5 nonstops a day between SEA and ATL and three of them are on ex-Song 757s. The other two flights are on a 763 and a 738.

Quoting Alaskaqantas (Reply 14):

Yes, that is the best way to tell.

Quoting Alaskaqantas (Reply 14):

On the 763...nothing special at all. On the 757 you do get a wider seat than the 763.

Not too bad of a plane. If you sit up front they have PTVs though not as good as what is on the ex-Song 757s. If you fly on thee 764 do what you can to get 7E and 7F. Those are the pilot rest seats and have tons of legroom and if you find the little switch in the back of the area where the tray folds up into you can recline almost 180 degrees.

So after saying that I'm thinking about using Delta i may have just changed my mind.
If I take AS down to LAX I can catch the 777 Flagship suite plane over to MIA then the A300 down, I have always wanted to fly on the 777, I haven't been able to but I love how it sounds! especially when the flagship suit is on it! then on the way back I will either take AS through SEA up to ANC or AA to either LAX or DFW on the coffin 777 then AS up to ANC. I would met up with my family in MIA on the way down, as they probably wouldn't want to take all those flights. I would love it, plus it would get me my MVP status on AS, which i didn't get this year  Sad.

Is the Coffin 777 worth it on the way back?
would it be best just to stick with Delta?
Once again THANK you so much for your help!

That was on AA... but after doing some more research I realised that it couldn't work, so now Im back to Delta. I wish I could have gotten on that 777, next time!

Does anyone have any other photos of the 757 or the 767-3/400?
I can still take DL on a 777 from NYC to Atlanta, but then I would only be backtracking.
A.net doesn't have alot or really any recent ones fro that matter, I'll have to contribute once I get some photos!

Here's my beakdown of the CRCs in ATL from best to worst.

1A - T7 (quiet and least used due to small number of gates in T)
1B - A Centerpoint (Big club, Bose listening area, sadly not open on weekends)
1C - C26 (Newest club still has that new club smell)
2 -E concourse (was just in last night, not overly crowded but close to full)
3 - A17 (Always crowded especially on weekends but nice, CocaCola Listening Room)
4 - B25 (Crowded on weekends and showing its age but ok overall)
5 - B10 (absolutely worst club in ATL. Small and overcrowded. Finally added exit door last year to ease congestion.)

Sorry to self gloss but...

Thank you very much DeltaGator! I will try out those three lounges and see what one fits what I want!
Here is what Im thinking of for our scheduule:
1:00am
ANC 8:45pm
SJO Multi-stop
Salt Lake City
(2 hr 34 min layover)
Atlanta
(2 hr 46 min layover) 17 hr 45 min Delta 792
Boeing 757 First (A)

Delta 832
Boeing 767-400ER First (A)

Delta 246
Boeing 757 Business (I)
---
return:
8:00am
SJO 11:57pm
ANC Multi-stop
Atlanta
(3 hr 20 min layover)
Seattle
(1 hr 34 min layover) 17 hr 57 min Delta 245
Boeing 757Business (I)

Delta 1038
Boeing 767-300First (A)

Delta 9029
73G
operated by Alaska AirlinesFirst (A)
---
My other choice for coming back would be to go through Salt lake and catch the 767-400ER(PTVs included in each seat) from ATL-Salt Lake, but then my transfer in Salt lake would only be 45 minutes. Unless you think that this is possible with out having something go wrong with flights normally geting delayed out of ATL. We would then have to catch the 757 up to ANC on Delta.

on the other hand with the flights that I put above the good thing about going through SEA with AS is that we would get Digiplayers on the SEA-ANC and that we would come into the new terminal (C) in ANC as well as our bags coming into the new terminal.

hope this isn't to confusing to look at, the schedule is off of Delta.com.

I'm going to call AS tonight to make sure that there is space as well as to get tickets down to SAN for a trip to the Rugby 7's in Febuary, I am going to take the 7 stop milk run through Alaska to SEA then down to SAN!

Is the lounge in Salt Lake very nice?
Also is there a lounge in SJO or should we not expect much from that airport?

Now I'm getting excited for this trip, can't wait to go down there!

I wouldn't expect much out of SJO. It barely even has a proper terminal, which has been under reconstruction for years thanks to delays due to disputes between Alterra and the government.

I couldn't find any information on a lounge in the international terminal, so your best guess would be to ask around with any airline that serves SJO.
