Which significantly large airport has the closest observation deck to a runway? Haven't been everywhere so I can't say with certainty but as far as Asia is concerned it would have to be NGO. Some evidence from the past week at Centrair:

Thank's for the amazing pics! That is a really cool observation deck. Too bad there isn't anything like that in the greater LA area...

I'm no screener, but I'd love to see some of those pictures in the database. As for the question at hand...I know of none. They've sort of been disappearing around the US, though I know Founder's Plaza at DFW WAS very close. However, it has closed and is in the process of moving.

NGO's my home airport. It's just as nice inside and it is outside.

You could get REALLY close at the runway at the old Nagoya airport in Komaki (RJNN?)

Here's a 757? 767? going by, as I stood at the fence:

Here's how close one could get:

Don't want to hijack the thread from Aaron747 though, nice pics! Big grin

Superb shots !
Reminds me that I really should pay a visit to Japan's airports in the coming years ...

DUS comes to my mind (if this makes it to the category of "major"), where there is a Observation Desk at the turning point to runway 23L. This one is part of the mainline railway station, and offers an enclosed area plus a balcony.

DUS isn't too bad either with also only one taxiway separating the Runway from the viewing deck.

Cheers

MSP's deck isn't far from 30R/12L, which unfortunately doesn't get the 747s which use 30L/12R. But still worth a try. Good views of pushbacks on the C and E concourses also.

Christchurch (CHC) runway is very close to the observation deck. At CHC you have a good clear view of the passenger side of the airport, apart from a small area of the terminal which blocks a part of the runway view

You can get pretty close at MAN judging by some of the pics in the database but I've never been so dont know for sure.
