The IL86 has been band from flying in Europe because of it's noise level. It has four large low by-pass engines with only 1.6 bpr, so they have to be pretty loud and smokey. I am asking anybody who seen an IL86 land or take off, to tell me how loud and smokey it is.
Yes they are really loud. At engine start, they sound like World War 2 bomb alert alarms. And on takeoff, well, even an old DC-9 or B727 won't make that much noise.
Some years ago, SU used to come to GVA with them during the ski season, and although I live downtown, I've always heard them takeoff and then fly over the city if they used rwy 23. Watching it takeoff is like watching a terribly noisy bumble-bee that strugle to go up.

I was in Moscow last summer an saw an IL-86 takeoff.
The sound is beautiful but not as loud as you'd imagine.
IL-86 CAN fly within Europe but only in Eastern Europe.

As I recall, when it was flying into JFK it wasn't startlingly noisy, or smoky either. I'll see if I have a pic.

Quoting Superfly (Reply 5): Those aren't long range aircraft.
I don't know about JFK, but SU used them to Havana. SVO-SNN-YQX-HAV. Quite a nice trip. No need to hurry. And I've also heard they were used on South American routes.
