The IL86 has been band from flying in Europe because of it's noise level. It has four large low by-pass engines with only 1.6 bpr, so they have to be pretty loud and smokey. I am asking anybody who seen an IL86 land or take off, to tell me how loud and smokey it is.

Yes they are really loud. At engine start, they sound like World War 2 bomb alert alarms. And on takeoff, well, even an old DC-9 or B727 won't make that much noise.

Some years ago, SU used to come to GVA with them during the ski season, and although I live downtown, I've always heard them takeoff and then fly over the city if they used rwy 23. Watching it takeoff is like watching a terribly noisy bumble-bee that strugle to go up.

I was in Moscow last summer an saw an IL-86 takeoff.
The sound is beautiful but not as loud as you'd imagine.
IL-86 CAN fly within Europe but only in Eastern Europe.  Wink

As I recall, when it was flying into JFK it wasn't startlingly noisy, or smoky either. I'll see if I have a pic.

Timz:
You flew an IL-86 to New York?
From where did you fly?
Those aren't long range aircraft.

I don't know about JFK, but SU used them to Havana. SVO-SNN-YQX-HAV. Quite a nice trip. No need to hurry. And I've also heard they were used on South American routes.

Cheers.

Aeroflot's regular flight to New York was an Il-86 in ... probably 1991. Two stops en route from Moscow, as I recall.

Wow. I didn't know they had the range.
When/if Aeroflot returns here to San Francisco, I'd hope it would be with there IL-96 and not the 767.

If SU will return. It will most likely be with either the 787 or the A350, depending on which one they get.

The IL-86 aircraft is very loud, but quite a beauty to fly. Take-off is simply intense, so slow and gradual its amazing.

That sucks.  Sad

Technically I can say I've been on an IL-86, but only the wing.  Smile
It would be nice to fly on one.

The IL-96 I flew on had the seats from an older IL-86.

I love the IL-86, flew it from SVO-DEL and SVO-LHR, fantastically spacious, even tho the roof came down on landing (slight exhageration)
