This is a very general question, but out of the 6 main US carriers (AA, UA, NW, DL, US, CO) which do you find the best in terms of:
Food?
Seats?
Entertainment?
Service/FAs?
I am not asking about a particular class either. Just all round. Ive only ever flown on American Airlines (SFO-JFK) on one of their B767s and found the flight to be pretty bad. Having said that, it was a red-eye, and I was stuck right in the middle seat!! FAs seemed friendly, but considering it was a 5 hour flight, they acted as if it was just a bus journey across town!
From past posts, Ive heard that Continental is the best one to fly with internationally.
So what are your opinions?
Please say if you find one better for domestic operations than International (and vise versa)

I chose United & Northwest based on service, fleet and destinations they serve.
They are the only two US carriers that have 747s.
They are the only two domestic carriers I'd fly internationally.

I've had great and poor service on all the major carriers listed, except I don't remember ever flying on Delta. Most of my life I've used either ORD or DFW, so I'd say AA or UA.

Continental is #1 even though I hate 737's with a passion in coach.
United is the absolute bottom of the barrel, sucktastic airline I try to avoid at all costs.
My list:
#1 Continental
#2 Jet Blue - very close 2nd place
#3 Frontier/Alaska
#4 NWA/USAirways
#5 Delta an ok airline, nothing to write home about but I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE Atlanta airport with every fiber of my being.
The toilet of airlines: Southwest, United, Airtran
I don't fly American airlines hardly ever....so no opinion.

Particular reasons as to why you hate ATL with your every fiber?
I am just curious since you're top 2 airlines' main hubs are at places I would certainly refer to as dumps.
Twinjets...if one fails, work the other one twice as hard!!!

Toss up between AA and CO. I also loath flying coach in the back of a CO 733 or 735. S80 isn't much better though.

As an Aussie I have no loyalty to any US carrier, so I may have an impartial view in some cases.
I have never flown on US so my top 5 are as follows,
1,Continental
2, Delta
3, Northwest
4, American
5, United
I have never had the opportunity to say " Gee that was a great meal thanks" on any of these airlines.
I do not like to see cabin crew chewing gum the entire flight.
I do not like being forced to remain in my seat next to an extremely overweight person when there are whole empty rows of seats available.
I don't believe that the fastest way from LAS to ABQ is via SEA!
This is all tongue in cheek but you get the general idea. I choose an airline to get to my destination, I'll go direct if I can and take Regional jets in preference to anything else. So CO express/ Expressjet.

Continental are my favourite except for the small regional jets that they use, but they normally mean 2 connections when I am travelling international.
Living in MSP means that NWA is my most used airline as they are more convenient but over the last 2 years they have been improving thier overall service and come a close second. The crj's they use are better than CO.
AA and US are ok but I have not used them for a long time.
Did not like United on 2 International trips I used them flying to Brazil and within Asia.
Never used Delta.

The best for food is CO. Seats usually depend on the plane. For example, AA's MD-83's are comfy, the 757's are not. UA's 777's are nice, the 733's are lousy.
I like UA in terms of IFE. The 777's and A320's in particular. Channel 9 is also an added bonus.
Service is again CO, AA would be the worst.
In addition, I will say in terms of fleets: UA and NW are the front runner's. AA and DL have their pluses as well.

Quoting Superfly (Reply 1): Tie between United & Northwest for the majors
NWA?
I'd go with
1.) Alaska Airlines
2.) Continental
AS has PTV's, serves food (yes it is $5 in coach), and best of all, the reson that they are really number one on my list: the Flight Attendants/all crew.

Well, since there is only one that serves food anymore domestically (and the only major 6 I have flown internationally), I go with Continental.
Seats, out of those six, I go with United Airlines, mostly because they have Economy Plus and all the seats are rather similar on these six, in my opinion.
Entertainment, I again, go with UA. They have dropdown monitors in most of their mainline fleet, and the channel 9 is the kicker which makes it number 1.
Service/FA wise, I would go with Continental. They took great care of me on EWR-OSL-EWR, and on all my EWR-SEA flights. Friendly, attentive, and helpful, it is all CO on this one.

When British people think of the American service industry, the "Have a Nice Day" friendly service culture I think is the image we all have in our heads. Unfortunately, I don't think this service culture extends to any of the major carriers in the United States, whose customer facing staff are well below the par of their European competitors. Regular trans atlantic crossings, also paired with internal flights, have taught me to expect a sub-standard service offering from American carriers. Flight attendants are often surly and poorly dressed, aircraft cabins tend to be quite scruffy, gate agents in hub airports address you as if you were on the subway and the quality of food options even for longhaul is quite poor.
This is obviously a general statement, some of the friendliest crews I've ever flown with have been from United Airlines, who have been happy to invite me to their galley on seeing my ID to chat about how flying used to be, the woes of the airline and the great experiences they've had.
