US Airways Transcons In F : Comments?

I'm scheduled to do a roundtrip SFO-CLT-FLL on US Airways in F. It will involve the following sequence of aircraft on the r/t: A321, A320, A321, A320. The first and last segments have breakfast and dinner, respectively.

I'm just curious what to expect, for example, a welcome on board drink (or just water, juice like UA) and should I bring a snack with me? (skimpy meals?)
The first flight out is breakfast and having a mimosa would be cool, if they stock something that bubbles. On each segment I got an aisle seat about halfway back into the cabin.

I know that F travel is not gourmet anymore, but I got a great deal and it will be a bigger seat, so I'm looking forward to it. It's also my first A321 ride and that's not easy to do in the states.

Since I moved the thread to the proper forum, the least I could do is respond:

I flew US Transcon several times last year, both on HP and US metal. Once in a 321, once in a 757. Also flew ANC-PHX/PHX-ANC, block times equal to a trans-con flight.

Meals were identical. Service was much better on HP metal with HP crews.

You will likely be disappointed. I certainly was. Other than decent cups of coffee, and free booze, the meal - if that's what you wanna call it - was very, very underwhelming. In plain, non-vulcan english - it sucked.

Was bowtie pasta with some sorry excuse of a red sauce (more like ketchup than a sauce). Pretty crappy all the way around. And it was served on 3 of the 4 segments I took.

Mimosa's you'll probably get. And any other kinda of booze or softdrink.

Bring something on board to snack on AFTER your dinner meal. You'll need it.

I've said it before, but I thought that F on US was just a perk for DM Preferred. I didn't think people actually paid for it. /sarcasm

Expect limited overhead space on the A320 in F (get on board first). Service on the A321 will probably depend on how full it is, though an SFO-CLT transcon will probably be full.

You'll probably have US A320s, but the HP A320s have 36" pitch (!!!) in F.

Predeparture drinks will probably be bottled water.

The snack basket is nice. Grab a nice variety of stuff.

I'm not inclined to pay for this in general, but it was a last minute deal and was hella cheaper than most of the other carriers in F, including DL, who doesn't serve much in the way of food up front either. NW was the only carrier who offered a price in the same range, and well, let's not go there.

According to SeatGuru, the US A321s and A320s have 38" of pitch. Maybe this refers to the non-HP aircraft only. Since I'm going through CLT I hope the A320 in question will be one of the US originals rather than the 36" version on HP. Of course, I'll know just by seeing the engine nacelles!

Thanks for the feedback and keep the comments coming!

Oh please, quoting a trip report from ONE bad trip. I am sure nothing like this has EVER happened on other airlines. But yeah, that TR poster has a HORRIBLE experience.

However, the above quoted trip report does not constitute the normal first class experiece on US... It's more as the other posters have said... if you got a good discount, then it was worth the money spent. It's a decently bigger seat.... also, as ANC said, I have had some great US (east) flight crews... but the HP ones tend to be better as a whole.

I don't mean to sound overly contrary Birdogger, but you should also read my Trip Report from the BHM meet in Septmber. US/HP in F. Start out with the FIVE plus hour delay on the first segment out of ANC and roll right on through the six itineraries and the unscheduled RON in LAS (I know, it's LAS - but still unscheduled).

Teething pains - sure. There's even a pic of the "lunch" - the bowtie pasta and ketchup in there . . . .

I'm sorry, but US F is just not something I'd pay for. I used mileage - still burning off the DMs I earned before retirement. That was 6 years ago . . . I had a LOT of miles.

Once US/HP finally get all settled in as ONE, I hope they will pay attention to their F product. As of right now, it needs work . . . . sorry Birdogger, this is coming from a former US Chairman's Preferred who was also a Platinum member with HP. So I know what they can do if they try . . . .

Here's just a quick followup note until a formal trip report comes along.

Yes, I witnessed the bowtie pasta of legend! The chicken pattie that comes with it looks for all the world like something I saw on the autopsy table in a recent episode of CSI.

I got hot coffee spilled in my lap by the f/a. Perhaps it's a sign they're headed for liquidation.

They lost my bag. For the last 48 hours I've been vainly typing in some reference number at their 'late baggage' link, only to have it tell me "no information available". The baggage office at the airport doesn't answer the phone, they say to leave a message, but they never call back. When I call an alternative 800 number, I get to some voice mail option that theoretically leads me to more info, but whenever I press the selection, I get the busy signal.

'Late baggage'. Sounds ominous. The obituary: "Mortimer, a black duffle, died today after a two day illness at US Airways. Loved by all, his vibrant yellow trim and wheelies will be missed. The family asked that donations in the form of a gift certificate at Target be sent."

You're lucky if you get a meal, even in First Class. Last June, I flew from Miami to Las Vegas on US Airways in First Class (nearly five hours!) and there was no meal service whatsoever. Just some cookies, peanuts, pretzels and drinks. The flight left Miami at around 8pm and they did announce due to the late hour (sic!) there would be no meal service on the flight so they suggested we buy food in the terminal to bring on board. I naively assumed having paid over $700 for the ticket that the public address was for coach class, I boarded without buying a meal in the terminal. What a surprise when the flight attendant said that no service in First Class either.
First and probably last time I will fly US Airways!!! I was starving. And what a horrible dirty crowded confused terminal in LAS where I connected for a flight to Santa Barbara. Never again!

I have flown US/HP in first class on the A320s. It is a pretty classless service. The quality is very LCC.

Here are the trip reports:

You will be disappointed, read my trip report I just posted, it explains the so called first class service you recieve on US. The trip report is MSY-CLT-SAN//CLD-LAX-MSY...don't get me wrong the HP metal and crews are very nice, but im stuck with the east metal, and Ive never had great service on east metal. Good luck.

On the return leg, CLT-SFO, at dinner time, no pre-flight beverages of any kind were served. It's a 12-seat cabin with a dedicated f/a, so resources couldn't have been the issue. I understand that alchohol is not necessarily offered pre-flight anymore, but there was not even water or juice available. That surprised me.
