Just thought we do one of these, since today they annonced they will stop to produce these fine aircrafts.

So what is the longest 747-400 route flown?

I know there are:
MEL - LAX 6883 nm QF
TLV - LAX 6581 nm LY (discontinued)
LAX - SFO 6445 nm UA, QF
SYD - JNB 6336nm QF
HKG - LAX 6309 nm CX

What are some other?
Was JNB - ATL, iAD or JFK done ever nonstop with a 744?

I flew on South African Airways from Miami to Cape Town in 1997 aboard a 747-400 (non-ER) version which was 7666 miles each way. It was about 14:45 each way. That was definately one of the longest.

Yes, SA used to operate ATL-JNB (7334 nm), ATL-CPT (7064 nm) and JFK-JNB (6925 nm). These were only nonstop eastbound (the westbound JNB flights stopped at SID, and the CPT flight stopped at FLL), but I believe they were the longest nonstop 744 routes--ER or non--that were operated regularly. As I have mentioned on other threads, I wish SA would reinstate the JFK-JNB nonstop--it is really a step backwards to have to stop at DKR both ways now!

ORD-HKG was also operated with a regular 744, but was "only" 6773 nm. Still, I believe that would have been the longest nonstop non-ER 744 route flown nonstop in both directions. I remember reading that they towed the aircraft to the runway at ORD so they wouldn't waste fuel taxiing!

Why do you say was, my reply above is current and they say 7789 miles where do you get "only 6773"

hahaha um I'm thinking that should be SYD-SFO not LAX-SFO...  Wink
NZ does AKL-SFO which is pretty far but not quite as far as QFs flights.

The "standard" used is, I believe, either nautical miles or kilometer not statute miles. The figure 6773 is probably nautical miles.

Sorry, that was suppose to be SYD - SFO.

Lets stick to NAUTICAL MILES (nm) - so we are all comparing the same.

I think if you look at the headwind component on the LAX-HKG segment, it actually is longer than the LAX-MEL segment. While the LAX-MEL segment has some headwinds, it doesn't approach the velocity that you normally see going to HKG from the US.
