Next month I have a 6-hour layover in London and will be travelling bewteen LHR and LGW to make a BA connection. I am thnking of hiring a car and driver for the transfer, and would like to be able to stop along the way for a pub lunch, or perhaps a brief sightseeing tour in the countryside between the airports. Any suggestions for a car hire, or should I just go through BA? Thanks.

Maggs swings, it's a drive deep to left! The Tigers are going to the World Series!!!

Save yourself about 50 pounds and take the Tube into the city from LHR and then take the Gatwick Express train to LGW for your departure. What? I don't remember. About 4.50 on the Tube in and about 9.00 GBP on the train back. Something like that, but a hell of a lot cheaper than a taxi, or a hired car. Have a good time.

Even if you knew the London area, I would not recommend driving on the M23 or the M25 if you've never driven in the UK before. The drive is simple enough when you look at a map and doesn't actually take all that long, but driving into central London and back out again to sightsee would take an age, plus you wouldn't have anywhere to park the car anyway once you got there.

Here's what you need to do:

Ride the bus:

Take the train:

* Take the Piccadilly Line from Heathrow to South Kensington in London, then switch to Circle or District Line to get to Victoria Station.
* At Victoria Station, pick up the Gatwick Express train to Gatwick airport.

By public transport the journey will probably take you a few hours, eating into your sightseeing time. Unfortunately London is massive and has massive transportation problems; six hours is really not enough time to do any serious sightseeing. You'll eat at least half that time getting from one airport to the other.
