Which Star Frequent Flyer Program Should I Join?

Hi all
I hope you can help. A friend of mine is taking a world tour and he just bought the Star world ticket. The route is: SCL-GRU-MAD-LHR-CDG-F R A -DEL-BKK-ICN-NRT-SYD-AKL-PPT-LAX-YYZ-SCL

He is taking the 39000 miles tkt. Anyway, this is the question: She has LanPass, so she is member of One World. Then, I think it's worth for him to join a Star FFP for taking this one.

Is there any difference in any airline he could join? I mean, perhaps the most smart decision is RG, since is the only Latin Airline in Star. This way, she could use the miles for Latin American destination.

But, my concern is RG's bad shape. Then, I think LH could be a good option, LH is a good airline in good shape, with daily flights to Santiago. If I take this option (join Lufthansa), is he going to be able to ask for any RG flight? or there are some restrictions when you change the airline?
Am I overreacting with my concerns of RG?

In this case, what is the best option for joining a Frequent Flyer Program?

Gracias )( Arcano

Personally I would choose UA or AC because they allow upgrades, and give free upgrades. I don't know if you will be flying either very much, but that could be a benefit because with the round the world ticket you will make it to Star Silver. However they are all roughly the same, and if you are flying a lot on LH, that could be a good option.

Happy flying, sounds like quite a trip for your friend

Thanks, but the point is this:
Probably, RG offers me most opportunities: Americas, Europe, Asia. AC does not fly here daily, and UA does not fly anymore.
So, since my concerns about RG, is there fully compatibility for joining LH and then try to get a RG flight, lets say to RIO, with the miles I've earned?

Sorry, I was confused originally. LH and RG would be roughly equal. With Star Silver, every carrier acknowledges you, and miles will get you anywhere. All the airlines are similar, and I guess RG would be good for you. Although they have tough financial problems, they most likely won't be disappearing tomorrow, so the miles will be valid probably long enough for you or your friend to use them. I would probably go with RG because your miles will be valid on any star carrier for free travel and it is convenient. You will probably fly them more, and they would treat you better if you were with them, rather than star overall. (airlines put their own silver members above others) Star is well integrated, so there shouldn't be any compatibility problems. The only thing that separates the specific airlines programs and makes some better than others are the extra perks they offer while flying on them. The North America ones have the best perks in my opinion (upgrades, priority stand by), and others are for the most part similar. The only important thing is that they give you 100% of miles flown. Both LH and RG do this. (NZ for example doesn't on discount coach tickets).

Your best bet for a 39000 mile itinerary is Air Canada Aeroplan. With all other * Alliance programs, you will only qualify for Star Alliance Silver but the Aeroplan threshold is 35000 miles for Aeroplan Elite which is Star Alliance Gold status.

Arcano,
make sure to check, whatever FFP you choose, its two-page long rules and conditions (usually written in barely legible font size 3 Angry) whether that program doesn't have 1000+1 exceptions when miles are not credited at all or only a fraction of them. Things like booking classes, etc. By coincidence I was asking about the same thing, not too long ago, for a different purpose though, and was often recommended UA's plan. Here's the thread, should it be of any interest for you: http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/1579847
