FRA Or MUC?

Hey everyone,
I realize that I've been having a lot of posts lately, but I'm getting ready to book tickets to Germany, and I just want to be sure that I make the best decision possible. So as of right now, Lufthansa is looking to be the best deal (which excites me because I've always heard good things even though their IFE is lacking). My group is considering leaving from either JFK or EWR in NYC or BOS. Both BOS and the NYC airports are equal in terms of accessibility and convenience. So, LH from BOS is flying into MUC with the A340-300 and from EWR and JFK it's to FRA, also operated with the A340-300. We are then making a connection to STR. Given all of these airports, which route do you recommend. I have a feeling that NYC and subsequently FRA will win, but if MUC is a much nicer airport, than I'll try to push BOS a little harder. Thank you!!

Well, if you're flying LH the whole way, then I'd recommend MUC. The terminal is quite new, and it's probably very easy to connect since all the gates in a straight line. In fact, I'd recommend MUC either way, for the same reasons. But if there's a significant difference in price, I'd say take the cheaper. FRA and MUC are about the same distance from STR. I don't know how customs is in MUC, but it's quite quick in FRA.

As I already stated in your other thread, I once again have to subscribe to the view of my previous speakers and recommend MUC as the hub for your connecting flights. Customs are fast and efficient and you will find your way to your gate easily. Connection time between arriving and departing flights can be as low as 30 minutes in MUC.

I've never been through MUC T2 although I'd love to someday as I've heard it's beautiful.

FRA is downright confusing in my mind. Out of all the airports I've been to, FRA is the only one I've been lost in and if even I get lost in an airport thanks to my sixth sense at airports failing, then you know something is wrong with that terminal. Hopefully FRA T3 will be more convenient.

Though I'd go via MUC personally, I'm not sure if there's a Bahnhof (train station in German) nearby MUC, but that may be an overriding factor for FRA.

There's an S-Bahn local train station directly under the terminal building with trains to the city center leaving about every 10 minutes on two routes, one with stops on the eastern side of the city and one on the western side, but if you're going to the city center, the elapsed time is about 40 minutes via either route. All trains stop at the main railway station in MUC so you can easily connect to other trains. One of MUC airport's minor negatives is the lack of a high-speed rail link to the city since the airport is quite a bit further from the city than FRA for example.

MUC, especially the newest Terminal 2 used by LH and Star Alliance carriers, is the 2nd most convenient and user-friendly connecting hub in Europe after ZRH in my opinion. It's only negative is that MUC's location isn't as central as most other major gateways and can mean some backtracking depending on your origin/destination, but from the US to STR there's not much difference vs. FRA.

BOS-MUC-STR for sure. Or EWR-MUC-STR. Both FRA (which I have successfully avoided for almost four years now) and JFK (which I had the misfortune to fly through three weeks ago) are awful IMHO. And especially if you have a tight connection, FRA is terrible and you will almost certainly not make it.

If youre travelling to STR, depending on where you are going to in STR, I d personally rather fly into FRA and take the High speed train (ICE) directly from FRA airport into STR main station. Thats a 1 hour trip and in my experience is a lot more conveniant than waiting 2 hours for the 20 min connection flight. Moreover, if you experience delays, you maybe miss your flight, but theres a train every 30 minutes.

Thats exactly what i always do when I'm flying from FRA. The trip to STR airport is nearly as long (give or take 20 min) as to FRA airport station. And i live in the middle of STR...

cheers, Tom

btw you do know that there's a direct flight ATL-STR once daily with DL ? its quite conveniant, of course there is the matter of connecting in ATL and that means backtracking for you from BOS/JFK...
