Hey everyone,
Some of you may have been following my recent posts; I've finally booked my tickets and I'm traveling with Lufthansa from BOS through FRA and on to Stuttgart (ZWS) on the ICE. Although I wasn't able to select specific seats, I selected 'window' as my preference. Does anyone have any good seat recommendations given the type of aircraft? Looking at seatguru.com and also orbitz.com, the layout appears to have economy in rows 24-46. SeatGuru mentions that the window seats (A and K) have limited legroom due to video equipment. Is that 'limited' leg room going to be a nusance (I'm about 5'10'')? Since there is no personal IFE, are the screens easy to see from most places, or are certain areas better than others? Also, are there specific rows where the window is really offset (really far forward, etc.)? How is the very front section of the economy class? It appears to be a much smaller cabin than the one behind it. I know this is not a big deal (it's just that I don't travel internationally very much) but from BOS-FRA is there a specific side of the plane that is best? Thank you all for your help. I really appreciate your input and suggestions!!

I highly doubt if they have any video equipment underneath their window seats. As far a i am concerned, I would prefer their window seats as they tend to give a little more space. I am 6' and I was happy to be on those seats. I love the views outside rather than a screen stuck in front of you for 10 hours.
Have a good journey/

I've just flown FRA-EWR/EWR-FRA on a Lufthansa A343, here's what I remember about the seating:
Flying out I think I was on row 30, it was just aft of the toilets and next to the emergency exit behind the wing. The seat had loads of legroom but two main drawbacks.
1) As you can't see the main video screen, a small (8"?) screen is provided on the facing bulkhead. This is sometimes quite hard to see.
2) The proximity to the toilets mean that there is a constant 'crowd' of people lurking in your vicinity. You might not be bothered by this but it annoyed the hell out of me especially when people are practically sitting on you!
Quoting Alitalia777 (Thread starter): SeatGuru mentions that the window seats (A and K) have limited legroom due to video equipment
Flying back I was in 36K. The seat provided a great view down behind the wing. I don't know what 'SeatGuru' mean when they talk about limited legroom, I'm 6' and found it just about adequate. I did not notice any difference between the legroom in my seat compared to my neighbours.
Quoting Alitalia777 (Thread starter): Since there is no personal IFE, are the screens easy to see from most places, or are certain areas better than others?
The video screens are sometimes obscured by people standing in the aisle, from 36K there is only one screen visible (ahead of row 30), the second screen is above row 35 so almost at right angles. The best view of the IFE would be from the centre section of seats, but I don't think it's worth moving away from the window where you get two views!
I can't comment on the forward cabin, apart from that it did look smaller.

I imagine that you will be flying overnight the same as I did. I was on the starboard side and because of the northerly great circle routing saw neither sunset or sunrise. However, I had no blazing light coming through either! The choice is yours!

I just flew from MUC to GRU on LH´s 343 and I had seat 21D which is in the second row of Economy. Since in Row 20 there are only 3 seats in the middle you have a great legroom and you can easily stretch.out your legs. My flight took 12:05 + some 30min on ground at GRU d/t a strike there and it was quite nice. Furthermore you have a very good view to the monitors from there.
Quoting Leskova (Reply 2): and limited legroom is a problem on all seats in all LH longhaul aircraft in Y class...
This was my concern too because I am 6'3'' but 21D turned out to quite nice.

LH's online time table for August lists
LH 423 to be operated with a A330-300 and LH 421 with a B744. ----> Which one is your flight ? Might also be worth to check equipment for a specific date ...
BOS - FRA you will be flying through the night. F/A's very likely will ask you to put down the window shades in order that the rising sun willnot wake up (or disturb) sleeping pax.
= There will be not much to be seen. Only in case you fly over land after take off from BOS and then when crossing Ireland, UK, The Netherlands and Germany (depending on exact routing).
Flying on LH 423 it will be still dark when you land in FRA.
Flying on LH 421 it will be dark when you take off at BOS.
If you get a "K" seat, the sun will shine into your windows over Europe ---> Get a "A" seat, if you still prefer to sit in a window seat.
If you check-in online, you will be able to select your seat.
If it is crucial for you to get a specifc seat, try to call the airline's reservation center and have your booking reference available.
Quoting Msnell (Reply 3): I don't know what 'SeatGuru' mean when they talk about limited legroom,
On seatguru.com this usually refers to a small (or medium-sized) metal box (holding some IFE-related stuff) that is mounted under the seat in front of you thus penetrating into the space where one puts his/her feet.

HT,
Every website that I have checked lists the equipment as being an A340-300. How is the A330-300?
Basically the A330-300 is a A340-300 minus 2 engines
Serious: There should be no difference in the cabin; having flown on a KL A332 AMS-IAD two days ago, I am inclined to say that the A332 was even quiter than the already rather quiet A343. This seems to be due to the different engines in use A330 (big fans) vs. A340 (smaller fans on the CFM56).
I will be on a LH A333 FRA to DTW Sunday 29-APR (but in Business Class) ...
Greetings from outside IAD,

HT,
Is there any chance that the aircraft might be former Swiss or former Sabena? Would it subsequently have their economy class seats, not Lufthansa's? Thanks!

I know I have been asking a lot of questions, but do both LH's A330's and A340's feature the same economy class seats?
I vaguely remember my A343 flights as LH now sends them into DTW every once in a blue moon. Though the A333 was imo better. Newer interior with better legroom and the seats seemed a bit firmer, but still manageable for my 8 hour flight to FRA.

Any idea if PTV's will be installed by the end of August? Does LH have plans of putting PTV's in the A340-300's?

LH is introducing PTVs in Y with the phase-in of the A380s.
I think it's safe to say that there is a 0% chance that you'll have PTVs on any other LH plane before the first A380s enter service, so, no, you will definitely not have PTVs on your flight.
But at least you'll have somewhere to put your feet... personally, I prefer that over having a PTV...

This is the wrong way round. In the morning, the 'K' seats actually are mostly facing west. Due to the great circle routeing the a/c is flying south-east as the sun rises, therefore the port side of the aircraft is the 'sunny' side.
I indeed was not factoring in that the OP will fly in August which gives the sun a (relevant) different position over the Equator compared to my flights with own experience - these mostly took place between October and March.
OTOH, the OP's flight is scheduled to land at FRA at 0525h CEST and by then he hardly will see any sun ...

I'm on flight 421, so it will arrive at 10:50 AM Frankfurt time. I also double checked, and for my specific date, the aircraft will be an A340-300. This is the aircraft used for this flight on Tuessdays and Wednesdays. For the other days of the week, LH operates the 747-400. Flight 423 however will be operated with the A330-300 everyday of the week.

This might be a weird question, but how are the windows aligned with row 34? Is a full view of the window located directly next to the window seat, or is the window kind of behind you, with the space in between windows located directly next to the window seat? thanks!!
